I didn't know they did that.  I'm not a big fan of that.  In talking to Mark, he left me with the impression that they wouldn't do that as culling anyone from the list would be instilling their own judgements upon the whole thing.

In the interest of accuracy, he said they limited each category to 30. He didn't say whether they had to drop anyone or close nominations early for a category. I should have asked when I had the chance.

The Age old statistics question. Is the sample compromised? Is the whole sampling process just wrong? What's the margin of era? At the end of the day ya never know.

I talked to Mark.  They basically took the entries with the most nominations, so therefore didn't impart any personal judgement.  I'm happy to report that I got more nominations than Mr. T and Obama.

I voted but it seems like BS to me. Nothing personal, but that is the kind of recognition we don't need :smt011  we are better than that.  Sorry Bushy and Polepole, no disrespect, just my 2 cents.

Not sure why I would take it as disrespect.  I have nothing to do with this competition ...

I think my point is that it was a waste of my time because the results a are meaningless because it does not represent reality. Leffingwell vs Shelter Cove as the only choices? You vs Bushy? Really? Yeah, you have nothing to do with it but I hate taking meaningless poles so don't ask people to waste their time by voting IMO.

I respect your opinion Scott and agree with it more than not.

I do, however, enjoy the discussion that has ensued and will continue to ensue!   :smt006  And I'm always curious as to how people perceive this and react to it.  There will always be the question of who/what/where is the best.  I'm pretty sure those questions will never be answered to the satisfaction of all.

I think someday, might be a long time from now, there might be a real nationwide circuit of qualifying tourneys to select each state's or region's best kayak anglers & then hold a real championship event once a year. Kind of like the Bassmaster but on a much smaller scale of course. As far as the 'what kayak or place to fish' is best that is too subjective to be anything other than mildly interesting. But it would be cool as hell for a local angler to fish his or her way up from obscurity to fish with all of the best anglers in the nation in one grand tourney.  on a kayak!

I guess if someone were to hold a championship event they could just draw from whatever kayak anglers won x amount of tourneys against xx or xxx amount of competitors during the qualifying period & then invite those anglers to attend? Maybe in order to fund a state/regional winner's travel costs the qualifying tourneys grand prize could simply be enough cash to cover travel costs to the nation wide championship. Sorry to go slightly off topic but Allen did say he would enjoy the 'discussion to ensue'.   :smt003

Sort of like Hobie did this year by inviting winners of many larger US tournaments to its Fishing Worlds. It's still imperfect, but it is a significant improvement in the competition. Hopefully they'll be back in the US next year, and fishing for something that outclasses 3-lb string.

Paul, I knew they allowed two guys to be qualified thru Kayak Wars but were there any others?

Definitely. An incomplete list:

2013 Kayak Fishing Classic at Jamaica Bay
2013 Bayou Coast Paddlepalooza
2013 Kayak Wars

And the 2012 IFA Championship, although that appears to have been retroactive. I don't know whether this year's recent event is a qualifier to the 2014 Hobie Worlds.

Hopefully there will be more next year.

For the sake of conversation (I'm talking to you Sansano  :smt002) I'm posting a selection of KACA finalists. Make up your own mind on their quality.

Angler of the Year:
Dee Kaminski
Chad Hoover
Tino Mendietta
Ashley Rae
Drew Gregory

Hoover has a TV show, runs a retailer, and owns KBF.com. He's run tournaments.

Gregory is a Jackson fishing pro who makes a lot of media, particularly GoPro video. He's also run tournaments.

Rae is a photogenic TV personality associated with Hobie. I'm not sure how deep her roots go in kayak fishing.

Mendietta - who is he? He fishes the Texas Gulf offshore from a Jackson

Kaminski is a Florida kayak fishing guide. I've met her. She can really fish.

Kayak of the Year:
Jackson Kayak Cuda 14
Native Watercraft Slayer Propel
Hobie Pro Angler 14
Wilderness Systems Ride 115X
Old Town Predator

Three of them are 2013 introductions - that makes sense.

Forum of the Year:
Texas Kayak Fisherman - TX
Kayak Bass Fishing - TN
Austin Kayak Fishing - TX
Kayak Anglers of Western PA - PA
Bayou Coast Kayak Fishing Club - LA

Nothing west of Texas. Move along.

Well?

Makes sense.

Texas, Tenn, LA, FL.....the most common denominator is that not one of these places contends with a  force as intimidating as the pacific.  Anybody, and their momma (literally) can kayakfish in those states.   Takes a certain breed to get it done over here, our voting numbers may not be very high but thats not necessarily a bad thing.

..........agarcia is just an ex-kayaker
