In a given day, NCKA gets over 400 members logging in.  In a given month we get ~1000 members logging in.  But that's only 1/2 the story.  In a given year we have 5.4M pageviews coming from 660K visits from over 200K unique visitors.  That's pretty damn large.  And this year's winter stats are already starting out 10-15% higher than the same period last year.

And to be honest with you, it's not cheap ...  money wise or time wise.  Which brings me to AOTY.  Other than advertising and some hawg troughs, AOTY is a major source of fundraising for this site.  This is the time of year that I typically start soliciting manufacturers for prizes.  I was a little surprised this year to see that AOTY signups are down quite a bit from previous years.  I know a large part of this is due to the naysayers and whiners.  Why anyone would want to discourage people from participating in an event that supports this site is ... well, it's just not the NCKA way to me.  Enough said on that.

If this site means anything at all to you and you'd like to give back a little (or pay it forward as we like to say), please consider signing up for AOTY.

And if you have some ideas for creative ways to support the site, please do let me know.  I suppose I could put up a donate button.

Plan on signing up, just haven't yet.  This is the first year since '07 that I didn't sign up in the first week of January.  I'll get on that Allen.

Sadly my procrastination cost me 19.5" of trout.

Also...for you guys that spend more time underwater than above it...

DOTY fees also go to the site...and you get to play both AOTY and DOTY once you pay the entry fee.  :smt001

And DOTY is hella cool and fun...just saying.  :smt002

Thanks Allen for all that you do to keep the site up and running. This place means a lot to me, and to a lot of us on here...in ways I never imagined when I first found it and signed up.

 :smt006

Sincerely,

Jim

Thanks for keeping it going Allen,
I have a few ideas that might help  :smt002
Lets get together and talk.

Even though i will not sign up for AOTY this year,
It doesn't mean I don't appreciate all you and NCKA has done. I will suport the site in other ways that might be more benificial to this site and comunity.
I will PM you my ideas.

P.S.
F.W.I.W. I hate to see all the site add ons, but understand the need to advertise for funding.
Maybe we could clean all the advertising into one area like the top of the page so we can use more of the rest of the page for the good stuf ... Reports and fishing discussions.

Is the advertising really that intrusive here?  I have a banner ad up at the top of the page and at the top of the left column.  I added a smaller one lower in the left column for event sponsors, but larger event sponsors will use the top banner and top column spaces that are more valuable.  And there is another smaller one at the bottom.  I removed the ones from the middle of the posts section as I did find those intrusive  At the end of the day, a good portion of the existing ad spots will go event sponsors, and not just AOTY sponsors.  You'll see more of this as the season gets going.  I don't make money on ads that are taken up by event sponsors.

At one point you complained that your event sponsors weren't getting ads here.  Well, they would.  And just to set the record straight, as we discussed, I did offer that in the past and you never followed up.  I'm just a little puzzled that you want to see more ads for event supporters, but you want to see less ads.   :smt009

Anyways, bottom line, I need to run the ads the way they are.  Shoot, I probably need to run more of them, but have to draw a reasonable line somewhere.

Thanks Eric.  But I'd feel a lot better if you kept it the great CHARITY event that it is.  NCKA is not a charity.   :smt002

Put up all the ads you need bro, it doesn't bother me. I just use tapatalk :P. As far as money to run the site, one thing that is really lacking that can help is a ncka store. Stickers, lettering, more stickers, and maybe shirts and yes more stickers! I find it quite difficult to purchase those. I would slap decals on everything I own if it meant keeping this site up.

Yeah, a store is near the top of the list of things to do.

Annual fundraiser event...like a dinner or potluck style @ $20/person. All proceeds go to the site. We do these type of fundraiser events for other clubs I belong to. But they usually do it at a nice restaurant and charge $50/person. They way NCKA rolls/cooks/potlucks, we could maximize our funds by doing it @ a less-expensive venue [like a park or a beach] and we could provide the food, instead of paying somebody to cook for us!
I would totally throw in $20 for a kickass fundraiser event. And I bet there's at least another 40 members who would do the same. That's $800 minus overhead (park or beach reservation). Heck, maybe that's what the PIF event could morph into?

I signed up for AOTY pretty early and glad I did,...caught ma'self a 22.25" trout a few weeks ago and blammo, in the game.   I see AOTY as a simple way to track your progress through the year and document the biggest fish(es) that you've caught in 2013.  Cool thing about AOTY is that anyone can win.  Even cooler thing is that the money benefits the site.   Fantasy Fishing, but real and supports my habit.

As far as the ads?  I don't really care.  I'm a big boy and can ignore ads that are based on my browsing habits.

Annual fundraiser?  I'd throw down on that as well and wouldn't be a bad idea at all.  Perhaps sliding scale to be all inclusive and cool with our brothers and sisters.

Store?  Hell, at this point I'll pick up some NCKA bikini briefs for myself please, pink, size XXXL if you have em.   :smt044

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't be as big on yak fishing if it weren't for this site.  So a big thank you to all thems admins and owners and all them folks I don't really know personally.  REALLY good job you're doing and it's getting noticed across the country.
