Looking forward to more tips on how you fish for salmon

Right on, Bro.  I'm always stoked to get people on the salmon.

For me, this is what everyone should consider at the Cove:  when salmon season is open you should always run gear that's legal to catch a salmon.  This would be a mooching rig with fixed circle hooks no more than 5" apart I think.  Pin a herring or anchovy on there and run it just off the bottom or even troll it - this will catch all species at the Cove - from greenling to big halibut and salmon.

My main gig is to troll for salmon, and, ironically, that catches all the other species too!  I've even had a big halibut on while trolling only a couple dozen pulls in 60' of water or so.

Trolling Rig:  DeepSix diving plane, two and a half to three feet to a Herring Dodger or other dodger/flasher, then 2.5 to 3 feet to your hooks.  The best hooks to use for trolling is a "mooching rig" - get the slip variety instead of the fixed, and don't confuse the fixed "mooching rig" you buy for a legal mooching rig for mooching!

I've never seen legal mooching rigs sold pre-tied - that would be two circle hooks fixed no more than 5" apart.  The "mooching rigs" you buy in packages are either fixed or moving(slip) j hooks.

Mooching Rig:  two circle hooks hard tied no more than 5" apart about 3' from a banana weight of 6 to 8 ounces.

It's confusing, but once you have it down you're set.  Read it a few more times.   :smt001

The other trick to catching a salmon at Shelter Cove:  stick with it!  Even last summer's awesome season required lots of hours/miles trolling per fish caught.

Here are some pics of a nice 22.25 pounder I caught in 2010 at the Cove.

The goodybags for each participant (guaranteed up to the first 150) will again this year include a Hawg Trough Extension and connector.  I'm going back to handing out a nicer alternative - upholstery connector that works better than the screw and nut.

You're not the only one, Jack!  Let's catch some salmon this year, People!   :smt007

I'm not sure how many we caught last year - maybe half a dozen on tourney day, but I'm not sure how many others may have been caught over the weekend.

I know I lost one at the net two days after GS6 and lost one of the only salmon of the weekend the day before GS5 at the net!  I'll get my redemption this year!   :smt003

Yes, I am definitely looking forward in catching a ocean salmon. I still need to learn how to drop the bait with paddling and how much line to let out. I'm sure I can find some older post to educate myself.

It's all about keeping your gear lined up while you're moving and letting out line in increments while continuing to move.

I've got another vid that shows it better maybe...  I'll try to find it.   :smt003
