I'd like to offer some salmon enticements over the coming days...  The ocean salmon season at Shelter Cove used to start on the second Saturday in February - that would've been last Saturday!  I caught plenty of early season kings at the Cove in the early 2000's...  Now we wait until they announce an opener, and it'll likely be in April - I'm betting on 4/13/13 right now.  This could be another banner salmon season, and future seasons are dependent on many factors - ocean conditions likely being foremost.

This tends to be the case:  Salmon congregate at Shelter Cove where the reef juts out across a normal migration route, and the reef also represents a source of feed in that the habitat around it becomes part of the salmon migration.  Keep that in mind...

I'll share some photos of Shelter Cove Kings.  It's the primary target for me at Shelter Cove.  Consider it.   :smt001

My biggest salmon ever.  38 pounds.   :smt001

I grew up fishing with my Dad on his powerboats out of Humboldt Bay and Shelter Cove.  He taught me how to catch salmon without a downrigger, and in later years when he did have the DR, he was the one who always took that rod!  I am a DeepSix guy.   :smt004

In all the years fishing the powerboats off Humboldt Bay mostly and a fair amount off Shelter Cove, we never brought more than a near thirty pounder to the boat.  So when I caught a 38 pounder on my kayak it was a whole new world!  I was thrilled to achieve it, but the heavy relevance to this thread is that this occurred in a small window of opportunity.  You NEVER know when a big fish will bite at the Cove.  Be Ready.   :smt001

Is Bird of Prey going to chime in with the Hali story where he was afraid of the fish he hooked that was bigger than Bigfoot's fish....and he lost it!

I gotta brush up on salmon tactics. Would love to actually land one from my SOT kayak. Salmon was my second ever yak-caught fish, a 16+ pounder in AK. In fact I think that was the last time I landed one, in 1998 :smt010
