Hey folks! This is an event I would really (REALLY) like to make. I've been on this board for awhile and posted a few times. Have never been to any NCKA event. I've been saving up to buy a kayak and I finally pulled the trigger and got one yesterday (Oh yeah baby!)

Would really like someone to sponsor me...since nobody here knows me, I thought I'd throw out a little about myself to possibly win over and get a sponsor.

So lets see...if I had to blame anyone for getting into this hobby/lifestyle, it would be from watching everyone of Eric's videos on YouTube. Totally inspiring, totally incredible. What can I say...wow. I love to fish, and grew up sailing the Channel Islands as a kid. I love the outdoors, I respect the outdoors, like I say....this is almost a lifestyle...something you feel to your core...something you're drawn back to when you're away for too long.

I've never owned my own boat, except for the canoe I take my kids fishing in (they're still small, but even still I can only manage to squeeze 2 kids in with me at a time) so this kayak is a big deal to me.

I'm an ICU RN at Oroville hospital (so you guys will have a nurse on site at the event...never hurts to have a nurse or two around at a big event). In a previous life I used to make video games - I was the producer for Rock'em Sock'em Robots on the Playstation when I worked for Mattel Toy company (check it out on YouTube...my small claim to fame) Lets see...I have a wonderful wife and 4 kids. I live in Chico (5 hours from the ocean...damn that's too far away!), but take the family to the beach every chance I get. I'll be doing mainly lake fishing, but only because of the distance...I hope to fish the ocean at least once a month.

Safety is very important for me. I have a PFD, dry pants, NRS wet boots, Standard Horizon VHF, all Coast Guard requirements, a light pole, manual bilge pump (soon to install 12 volt pump...keep the manual as backup), first aid kit, pool noodles galore (still need to stick em in the boat though), etc., etc. (Am I missing anything important?)

I promise NOT to get drunk, take my clothes off and streak, or pick any fights with Hells Angels...
I DO promise to contribute to the event in anyway I can - where help is need or required, to add to the event as a true sportsman, gentleman, and to add to the all-around 'good vibe' this event has....and if I have to and get desperate, I guess I could bribe someone for sponsorship (PM me and we'll arrange a Paypal transaction...  ;)

Thanks for your attention, tanks for this wonderful group, and hope someone will tip their hat to me to get into this event.

Now back to rigging up my new yak...I want to hit Almanor Sunday, but heard its still pretty frozen up there...anyone have any news?

-Murf

The only thing I'd say your missing is time on your new ride - congrats (again) by the way.  You'll want to be uber familiar with it and practice your self rescue.  The ocean is NO joke!

You sound like a stand-up guy and if I didn't need to be sponsored, I'd do it for you but alas I can't.  I know that wasn't helpful, just thinking out loud.

Hey sorry if this has already been answered. I am like brand new to the sport, but I would love the chance to get up there and learn from others.

So, my question is, if I am by no means ready to compete, is there a way to come and just hang out and learn? I mean it is a free country, but I don't want to mooch... er... I mean take without paying :)

Murfman - Welcome to the tournament!  You are good to go - register at will.   :smt001

This is not arbitrary.  Anyone who wants to come to this thread, or to the open forums of NCKA in general, is free to bare their soul in this way and appeal for an at large sponsorship.  I'm all about this kind of communication - nicely done, Murf.  I look forward to receiving your registration, and I look forward to meeting you at Shelter Cove.

One of the coolest parts of having put on the events is the new people that it brings into the fold - The Madness is what we call it.   :smt004

DrO - well-timed question!  I like your approach, and I want you to know that you are totally welcome to participate without registering - come see how it goes down and get familiar and comfortable with your open ocean abilities.  If you get some ocean time prior to the close of registration and do decide to get a sponsor and join in the tournament I'm sure you can make that happen.  Even if you don't register for the tournament you are totally welcome to join us at the potluck and camp in the group area on the same terms as those members who are registered in the tournament.   :smt001

Shelter cove was my first taste of the salt an it was awesome very protected launch just remember to have a radio, stay close to the plastic fleet, and if the wind starts blowing pay close attention an paddle into it not with it because the farther u get from the launch the harder it is to get back lol

Helped Domenic process herring last night - thanks, Dom!  And got about an hour in on the Eel this morning in cold wind for no bites at the mouth of the Duzen - nice to get out for a paddle.  It's all peripheral to GS at this point.   :smt001
