Interesting turn of events :smt007! Just asked my boss for the time off and I got it!

Now I have to secure some funds; that $500 gas bill for GS would have just about covered this trip... :smt013

It will be really awesome if you can make it bro!  I need my wingman!

I use the Owner Ringed Mutu Circle hooks so I can use a palomar or San Diego jam knot instead of a perfection loop. I often use a fluorocarbon leader so the bait swims better using a ringed hook or perfection loop. The perfection loop is an 80% knot where a palomar or jam knot is 100% so when your cutting kelp you can push the line harder.

As far as what to target, I would target the big 3: YT, WSB and halibut if there is a legit shot at them. You will need a gaff to land YT and the the longer the handle, the better. Gaff them right behind the gill plate. Calicos are hard fighting and decent eating but I didn't target them on the Islander for a couple of reasons:
1. They aren't any better eating than rockfish
2. The calico fishery in SCAL is not really healthy
You will catch rockfish as by-catch on the dropper loop and yo yo iron. Personally I would bring a shelton descender and send them back down. We get much higher quality rockfish up north and SCAL rockfish have more worms, particularly the boccacio. One thing I would target particularly for the spearos are sheephead. They fight hard and yes they really do taste like lobster and the fishery is healthy.

As far as targeting YT there are 4 basic techniques:
YT near the surface
1. Trolling live bait or plugs
2. Surface Iron
YT near the bottom
3. Yo yo iron
4. Dropper loop live bait
I caught my first kayak YT on the Islander in 2007 butterfly jigging in 200 FOW. I hope you guys get into them because nothing fights like a jurel. There are good articles on Jim Samons website. Good luck!!!

Welcome aboard Pat.

I talked to CJ.  He'll put up a more detailed list next week after this weekends trip gets back.  But much of what you should bring has already been covered in multiple posts here.  Let us know if you have more detailed questions.

We had another drop out today.  Needless to say, I'm a little disappointed in the number of last minute drop outs.  What's up with that guys?

Everything was green light when I signed up way back in the begining of the year.....then I got hit with this last week at my advising apt.

I'm also returning to sjsu to finish my degree and learned that a half dozen new pre-reqs had been added to the lower division coursework for my major.  So I'll be knocking out my first week of a 4 day per week, 2 hour a day, Econ 1B class this summer while someone is enjoying my spot on the islander trip :(

I suck.

I picked about the worst year I could to go back....school has fkd up alot of things for me so far  :smt013

..........agarcia is just an ex-kayaker

Okay now it's Glen's turn.  Come on Bro!!  I'll cover half of your cost. That's for cleaning up for all the mess I make every time I stay in your RV.    :smt003  Anyone else want to make it a no brainer for Glen the (G-Whiz)  ? A few 20's here and there.

I think there are still 3 cancellations at this point, heard about another one this morning.  I'm trying to confirm the current list and will update later today.
