How deep would we be fishing for cod, or in general?  Is an Avet SX high enough speed for the yo-yo-ing?  Clothing options for on and off the water?  Drysuit too much there?

I mostly fished under 100 feet when I went, with the majority of my fishing even shallower....but if I recall correctly the second or third trip they were fishing in 200'. It all depends on where the YTs are and where the boat drops us. I didn't target rockfish at all.

It was cold when I went last time. I'm wearing my drysuit and bringin' a sweatsuit for chillin' on the boat.

In Loving Memory of Mooch, Eelmaster, Shicken, and Cabeza De Martillo

I started kayak fishing to get away from most of you...

I could totally see you rocking a pimp-ass Al Davis sweatsuit!

Yes.  I've done it.

Shoot, I've yo-yo'd with a 3.25:1 Penn 113 before.  You just have to reel about as fast as you can.  Back in the day, 4:1 was considered high speed.

Ordered a Shimano TLD 20a two speed.  I will be sending it back.  It is massive!  And heavy!   I swear it will hold 4.5 miles of 80# braid.  Any recommendations on a lighter, smaller two speed that is less than $300?

I have an Avet SX 6/4 which I have used for 7 years. I use it for lings, WSB, and YT. It is my go to reel and has never let me down. Daiwa saltist would be my second choice.

GB2, as always, you are the technical guru.  Thank you for the spot on advice.  I'll google for the best price now.  Come to think of it I have a gift certificate for cabelas I need to use.   Thanks!

An Avet SX has only 9 oounds of drag max at strike.  That doesn't even make it a true 30 pound reel (although I use it as one).  IMO, 2-speed in an SX is overkill.  There is one reason I can think of to have 2-speed in a smaller reel like this, and that is if the high gear is really high.  But the high gear on the 2-speed SX is 6:1.  It draws 36" per crank.  The high speed on a non-2-speed Avet 5.3 draws 30 inches.  Not much difference there, and I can't think of a time I've wished I had a low gear when using my SX 5.3.

and he uses it a LOT!!

I even got one cause they are so strong and small.

I may have to re-spool with braid though, Scott is scaring me with all the kelp-cutter references.

I have hooked and landed YT to 25# and YSB to 65# on my Avet 6/4 from a kayak and 6" per crank difference is significant if you are yo yo jigging in 200 FOW for 4 hours straight hours. The high speed is great for working jigs and the low gear is great for grinding on big fish. It isn't a true30# class reel from a PB perspective BUT from a kayak it is more drag than you will probably ever need. In 6 years I have never wished I had more drag. If you hook a 30# class YT  less than 5' from the bottom, not even 40# of drag and 80# mono will not stop them. Yeah, I have heard the SX 6/4 overkill argument for 6 years but I don't know any big game hunters who own them say that they are overkill. They are not necessary, they just make big game hunting easier. Hey lets's put this in perspective, they cost the same price as a revo toro and it is a 2 speed lever drag made in America and built like a M1A1 tank. How many times do Revo Toro owners use/need 22# of drag or even cast? Just saying.

I don't think someone is going to actually reel faster for 4 hours straight on the water.  So the SX 5.3 will just retrieve at a slightly slower speed.  Anything in the 30 inch per crank range or more is good IMO.  A Newell (whatever version is the Penn 113 equiv) with a 4:1 ratio, an old school iron reel, gets about that.

I don't use my reels on kayaks only, so a 30# reel needs to be a 30# reel for me.  But an SX is close enough.

"Overkill" may have been the wrong word.  Yes, they are not necessary.  But they are $90 more.

Hey, I've never used an SX 6/4 and I'm guessing maybe you haven't used (or rarely use) an SX 5.3.  How about we each buy the other and give them a run?  Then let's have this conversation after the season and see if we have a different view.

We haven't even delved into the MC and Raptor discussions yet.   :smt002

I have owned an Avet 5.3 for 8 years and prefer the 6/4 for big game. Single speed reels are a design compromise. For big game, 2 speeds rule.  The Penn 975 is my favorite single speed star drag reel. I own different rigs for boats because it is a different style of fishing.  It's a a luxury I guess but I am not even in the top ten tackle junkies on NCKA .  :smt005

For big game, I prefer the JX 6/3 ... 46" per crank too!

My mom asked quite a few questions yesterday.  She told me this; bring a towel and a change of clothes.  There will be three meals a day and snacks twice.  Not sure on the booze thing.
