I'm with Dave on this one. Why pay $ unless you absolutely have to?

The only problem is when you absolutely have to register it, it'll be after a citation + court and processing fees.  If you really feel like you gotta stick it to the man, write yourself a receipt for a hundred bucks so when you register it you're not paying luxury or property taxes.

It'll probably be a while till they pop up on the radar at most lakes and harbors though.

Most of us as kayak anglers tend to be honest.
However, I see a trend to want to move away from the kayak standard set forth by the Inuet.
First the evolution of the SOT, than the Peddle Drive, and now the Sail.
I guess the real question is ... how far do you want to go and still claim to be a "Kayak Angler"?
The laws defining most vessels were put into place long before any of these "Sail Yaks" were even thought of. I guess you have to ask your self, How honest are you ... to your self?
Eventually we will all be charged a fee to use any vessell, but the more disshonest we become, the more fuel there will be to push this forward.
If you are going to buy a vessel known as a Sail Boat, than you already know what is required.

Be honest to your self first.

Kuya Mel,

There's a AAA office inside Lucky in Union Landing (near the Century Movie theaters).  They have dmv services.  Maybe they can help you.

Bob

Great idea, thanks!  I was told by the sail boat owner the registration is good for 2 years.  Not sure if correct.  I can live with paying $29.  Like I mentioned before its cheaper than a getting a ticket.

At one point in the distant past, registration helped inform counties of boats kept within their jurisdiction for purposes of personal property taxation.  It's been so long since I've had my 15 foot sailboat (registered) that I forget most of the details, but for a few years I had to pay both for registration to the DMV and personal property tax to the county, then, after some years, I quit getting the tax bills, and I have a vague memory that it was either because the value was depreciated by the county each year and got near nil, or that the state laws changed and boats were no longer taxable as personal property.
One thing registration might be good for is for identification purposes in case of theft, and the DMV might require the vessel to have a serial number engraved in the hull in order to register it, so a boat would need both the CF number and a serial number, or whoever possessed it would have some 'splainin do - if there are even police agencies left with enough officers to check boats for such things.

Property/luxurty taxes on boats didn't go away, the depreciation factor is more likely the reason for not getting a bill.

I tried registering mine at my local CSAA DMV Services and they do not handle this type of new registration.
I will mail forms and check to DMV.

Good move, Scott.  During the regatta the USCG could be patrolling.  They know the regs.

It will be interesting too with counties like Lake County and quagga inspections.  Yaks are exempt... but once they are registered as a sailboat I would imagine they would them be subject to inspection, which is another pain in the ass if you are traveling there to fish and not a resident.
Never trust a man that doesnt like to fish...

As far as being true to our ancestors, mine were Polynesians not Inuet and they used sails and outriggers.  :smt005 :smt005 :smt005 :smt005 :smt005 :smt005 :smt005 :smt005 :smt005

What is your heritage?
I am always intrested in hearing family histories.
My family is of Hawiian decent, Both my parents were born and raised on the islands as was their parents. My family has a rich history on the Islands that goes way back to before it was overtaken with other cultures.

As for the "True to your ancestors", please don't miss quote.
I said "the kayak standard set forth by the Inuit"
The Inuit's are believed to be the first true kayakers,
My family history paddled dug out canoes with outriggers.
