Looks like AI's need to be registered to DMV.  I was with my family at Lake Elizabeth in Fremont yesterday and saw 3, 13 foot sail boats in the parking lot on trailers.  All had CF numbers on them.  I spoke with one of the owners and told me about the regs below.  If you search CL for sailboats, most between 13 to 16 feet have CF numbers on their pictures.

I don't of know any AI owners who have registered so here is the regs:

Generally, every sail-powered vessel over eight feet in length and every motor-driven vessel (regardless of length) that is not documented by the U.S. Coast Guard which is used or on the waters of this state are subject to registration by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The vessel must be located in California.

It's true that they need to be registered.  As far as I've seen, mine are the only ones that are registered.  They have stickers but no CF numbers, they were registered by the previous owner.  I was not planning to renew it, but haven't made a decision quite yet.

I am going to register.  If I read the fees right its $29 for even years and $49 for odd number year.  Cheaper than a fine.

Sailboats over 8' have been required to be registered since before I was sailing over 35 yrs ago. I'm sure it was a law long before that. That is why a little sailboat callled a Sabot was so popular as a dingy for larger vessels. It is exactly 8' long with a snubbed nose.

My understanding re AI registration requirement is what is its primary means of propulsion...

If it has a mirage drive I would argue that the sail is incidental, and that the drive is the primary means of propulsion so therefore no CF requirement..

I could be wrong though but I am not giving state any more $ unnecessarily.

I'm with Dave on this one. Why pay $ unless you absolutely have to?

On another note I just read somewhere that there's legislation in the works that would double the cost of boat registration for the purpose of providing funds to offset costs of quagga inspections. So keep that in mind if you decide to pay up. I don't even want to think how much they would levy if & when any major reservoirs have to be capped if they became infested.

The hobie dealer in Sacto will register it as part of the purchase because they've had customers cited at berryessa. Sooner or later you're going to use only the sail, so that's going to be your primary means of propulsion and you could get cited. I've never heard of anyone being cited in the bay or ocean so it's up to you if you want to take the risk.

Not True The law reads.

Quote
Vessels propelled solely by oars or paddles
Do not have to be reg.

If it's over 8' and has ever been sailed or powered you legally have to register and it is no longer a Kayak it's a Sailboat or a Power Boat.
Everybody always brags about how Law abiding Kayakers are and follow the DF&G regs. It's time to man up so you don't screw it up for all the people who do follow the Law. I'm sure Kayak reg. is coming this will just speed it up.

Is it legal to fish from an unregistered Sailboat ??

ON the Registration Form, Is the Cost/Value amount before tax or with tax included?
Never filled one before.

Anybody know what the fine is for an unregistered sailing vessel?

Kuya Mel,

There's a AAA office inside Lucky in Union Landing (near the Century Movie theaters).  They have dmv services.  Maybe they can help you.
