Eric -

You can pay me OTW before you start fishing if you want to compete. I will be in a yellow Adventure with one outrigger with a golden retriever and American flag. Kind of hard to miss.  :smt005 We will be somewhere northwest of the red buoy. Will be on 69. I will fishing with PatR Sunday. CG station, 530AM launch.

Scott,
Is circle required for M.B salmon?

You should review the regs. Barbless circle hooks only.
Here's what I found on the CA DFG web site last night .... and the reason I questioned the circle hook.

"North of Pt. Conception: No more than two (2) single-point, single-shank barbless hooks shall be used, and no more than one rod per angler when fishing for salmon or fishing from a boat or floating device with salmon on board."

   They go on to specify...

"Horse Mt. to Pt. Conception: If fishing with bait and angling by any other means than TROLLING1, no more than two (2) single-point, single-shank barbless CIRCLE HOOKS 2 shall be used. The distance between the two hooks must not exceed five (5) inches when measured from the top of the eye of the top hook to the inner base of the curve of the lower hook and both hooks must be permanently tied in place (hard tied).
NOTE: These special gear restrictions apply to each angler fishing for salmon or fishing from any boat or floating device with salmon on board."

My take is go with the circle hook.... glad I saw the note about no slip-rigs.  The last time I fished Salmon, I believe slip-rigs were still the "norm" and you could fish with a barb!  Ahhh, the good 'ol days.

Thanks for the picture of the setup.  I was planning on fishing quite a bit lighter @ 2oz because of the rod tip action.  Would that be overly light?

You will be fishing from 160-200 FOW 20-40 ft off the bottom. The general rule is use the lightest weight you can but at that depth, 4 oz was the minimum and most were using 8oz.

Good to know.  Might have to run a slightly stiffer rod.  I had a new Tiger Rod with light action tip in the 8' range but I noticed it has a great amount of bendo with 4-6oz of lead on it while testing it at home.  I'd love to see what it does with a salmon on the other end.

Where can I get that bait?

OPS usually has them but have been running low lately. Don't get the small red label herring, they didn't for me last week. If you can't find the green label get a tray of the jumbo herring and use a 2 hook, 6/0 circle hook rig. Ken was using 8" sardines last week and killed it. The other places would be Emeryville and Berkeley marinas and Mikes baits. I am making a bait run tomorrow morning. Let me know if you want me to pick up some.

Thanks Scott.  I'm fishing with Lapu Lapu Rey in Monterey, early tomorrow morning.  Hopefully we can get decent bait near the launch.  I plan to mooch with 6/0 Owner barbless circle hooks.

Unless you wanna pay for parking twice, it's better to park & launch from MBK. Otherwise, you might have an "interesting" paddle back to your car @ the CG jetty after the potluck, raffle, beers, etc.

Just re-stocked my box for Salmon @ Coyote Bait & Tackle in Coyote (North of Morgan Hill - South of San Jose) right off Old Monterey Highway.  Nice guys with a well stocked tackle shop for everything between bass & saltwater game fish; including live & frozen bait.  Luckily I didn't take enough money with me today so I have to go back tomorrow  ;)  Had to drool over the selection of nice shiny Avet reels.  The glass case kept the drool off the reels though.
