Eric, is the group area they are providing separate from the regular sites? Seems like most of us who divulged our site #'s are in the 90's and 100's.
Thanks for all your hard work!

Jack is no idiot :smt002

I have already paid my deposit on a site and planned to share the site with Fisheducator/Tim and Brandi.

 3 different scenarios :

Scenario #1,  $20 per person flat fee per night.
3 people for 3 nights = $180
 :smt009

Scenario #2,  $33 per site fee 2 person max. ($10 per person extra)
3 people for 3 nights = $129
 :smt003

Simple subtraction:
$180 - $129 = $51 saved for scenario #2. That buys a lot of beer :smt003 or 1/2 tank of gas :smt013

If we stay in a site can we still visit the group area or will we be charged an entry fee? :smt044

Scenario #3, $8 bucks a night at FS or BLM CG and no extra frills or fees. :smt004
3 nights = $24

Simple subtraction:
$129-$24=$105 saved over scenario#2 :smt007

Tim and Brandi, what option do you like?

See you there one way or another,
Tad

Thank you, Tad, for your scenario - you're right.  You should consider the extra vehicles too though.  I encourage people to check the options out there.  I would advise that staying up at the forest service campgrounds is a stretch - it's a journey, and your stuff is all by itself up there while you're down at Shelter Cove.  The campground and deli is right in the middle of the action and has always been at the heart of the event.

I need to talk to Jack on this.  I think he needs to consider that people want to be treated as individuals and trusted to pay for their sites that way.  The space issue - that maybe us with all of our ocean gear and yaks take up more than a site - is likely what we're dancing around here.  If he's giving us substantially more space for a little more money because that's what we need then we should accept it, but I don't like the fact that he's already taken some peoples' money and is now changing the rules.

Tad, thanks for the calculations  :smt002  Ya know, times are tough for a lot of folks I know right now.  That and the cost of gas going up so fricken fast and early in the year it's hurting a lot of wallets pretty bad.  Then of course its also kind of my first real vacation of the year, and really like to hang with the rest of the NCKA crew.  But if I can do that during the day, and stay only a few minutes away it's something I've got to consider too.

Maybe we should have the weigh-in cutoff time @ 2 instead of 3. I know lots of people will be anxious to hit the road, and a later cutoff time seems like even more work for you. But it's just a suggestion. I'm stoked for GimmeShelter5! Thanks for putting up with all our bs. My No-PayHull check is going in the mail tomorrow! (but honestly, it's not a check; it's cash because I ran out of checks like 2 years ago and haven't needed one since...it's friggin 2011 and we have interwebs!)  :smt044

I agree with Eric that it doesn't feel right that those that have already paid are having the deal changed after the fact. I'll likely pay whatever the price is and enjoy the weekend. I don't have to like everything about it to have a great time and I'll get over it.

That being said, my first reaction is to say...wait a minute, groups usually get a group rate, but we're paying more. Were we really that much of a problem last year? I understand that we get some extras such as firewood and a washdown area. Again, nothing I can't get over pretty easily. It's just on the back of my mind.

Here's some math for you. Assuming around 120 people camping. It's a guess from last year.

                              Old deal    New deal
Total People                $20        $16.5
Nights Stayed                    3               3
Total Revenue            $7200       $5940

Difference                                     $1260
Porta potty rental                          -$600
Free Firewood                                -$200 I don't know, maybe more
Washdown area                            Probably free, again, I don't know

It's just food for thought. It's likely fairly close to a wash for Jack.

Eric, I haven't sent my money in yet. I was hoping to send it in for my brother and me at the same time, but he had a motorcycle crash recently and we won't know until much closer to the 4/15 deadline if he can paddle or not. He broke his wrist so he's a maybe. The doctor is saying 6-12 weeks recovery. I'm thinking positive, but if I pay his entry fee and then he's not able to paddle, can he get his fee back?

I'm down with that, PK - 11AM - 2PM could be check-in time, and we could move the awards up to 4PM and get an early start on the potluck.  Thanks for the suggestion.   :smt001

Gabe - last year I sent the t-shirt and goody bag to those who couldn't make it but had paid.  That's what I plan to do this year too if someone pays and can't make it.  I hope that's cool with you, and you could always consider substituting someone else for your bro's entry if he can't make it.  This just made me think - someone might scalp a GS5 entry for much higher than the $25 entry fee!  OK, no selling your entries, people!   :smt044  If your bro can't make it we'll find a way to either get his $ back or set him up with the t-shirt and goody bag.   :smt001

Chadrock - sorry I got busy and almost spaced your message back there!   :smt003  I believe the numbers that were being given out were in the group area, but I'm not sure if they have a method.  If that's the case then hopefully they'll keep issuing sites within the group area and it'll become apparent whether all of this is an issue.

Eric, The pot luck on Saturday is a great idea! We might as well have the awards presentation at the same time on Saturday too as I am going to win it this year :smt003
