This attack obviously wasn't curiosity. It may have been a  "get the hell out of my area what ever the hell you are"

This is highly possible.

Read about the Carrion Feeding towards the bottom of the page Adam linked earlier, and it clearly seemed to show this.

They were taking turns filming a 4-to-5-meter White Shark that was feeding on the carcass of a whale. The current had slowly carried the boat close to the carcass of the whale — tentatively identified as a Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) — when the shark abruptly abandoned its feeding, turned and swam over to the Velmar, and bit the swim step several times. The shark caused only minimal damage to the step, but its actions shocked both fishermen. The shark then sounded and was not observed for several minutes. However, after DiCristo moved the boat 10 to 15 meters from the whale the shark returned to feed. Within several minutes the boat had again drifted to within 3 to 5 meters of the whale, whereupon the shark suddenly turned and, moving swiftly, rammed the boat several times, pushing it several meters across the surface. These startling events took place over a four-to-five-hour period. Both fishermen described the shark's actions as being more combative than predatory, almost like it was attempting to "frighten or chase us away, rather than eat the boat." Whenever the boat would drift near the whale, the shark would abandon the carcass and focus its attention on the boat.
Just a walleye fisherman from MN tryin' ta get salty!

either you guys are very good at writting and hitting raw nerves or i'm still suffering hard from PTSD. I and theeMightyJasonLee went back to the Bean saturday. I did not go back to fish it, i returned to praise it, give it thanks, and make up a sacraficial ceremony of things that make me whole.

theMotherOceansH2o, Fruit&Herbs from her womb that i consume daily, a wild flower from the Bean, 2 NCKA gifts of power (a handcrafted Hook from Picsean & a handmade plaque from Guitarzan). My paddle of life and the shoe that got torn off my foot by whitey.
WHATitMEANS?iDOnotKNOW!  but i had to do something i've never done before. = cry like a baby on the shoreline along the SMC.

FisHunter,

That is a perfect end to a great act of survival dude... I would have done the same! Did something similar with the last physical memory of my old man, I dropped it at the mile buoy, to the bottom of the ocean with Stoggie, Eric B and Al during the PIF event. Shared a beer, shared a shot, and carried on, feels good!

Thats the way to do it! Stoked for ya. Crying just means your ALIVE!!!

EDIT: I appreciate your honesty with how your feeling man, something I am working on myself. Thats a good trait!

Not trying to deter anybody from carrying pepperspray OTW...but I wonder what happens when you spray a bunch of pepperspray in a pool then jump in? Now imagine doing the same in the ocean while trying to avoid a white shark and reboard a kayak.
It's feels good to hear you dealing with this stuff in such a productive way FH. I think your ability to share with the community helps us understand & deal with it, too. Thanks bro! Let us know if there's anything we can do to help!

Adam,

I know you probably don't remember me. We've been at several events together and we talked for a few up at Albion.  I know we're not best bro's, but as a fellow NCKA'er I feel a connection of sorts. Your experience has been resonating in my head a lot lately. I hope I can put into words what I really mean to say. I never know how and when to talk about this so here goes.

You're handling this frightening experience better than many guys would. You're braver than I am with sharing your experience and emotions. Most guys, my self included, don't want to talk emotion. I'm not good at it, at all. When something happens to you that makes you ponder your own mortality it brings out emotions you can't easily control. It isn't meant to compare to what you're going through, but I lost a co-worker last year. I lost him after performing CPR on him and watched his heart stop beating for the last time, right in front of me. At first It didn't really seem to effect me, but after some time it started happening. Other people tried to get me to talk about it, but I didn't want to. Inside I felt like I didn't do as much as I could have, among other unpleasant feelings. I felt stupid for not being able to control the way I felt. I could talk about the events easily, but not the emotion. I think the fact that you can is amazing and a really good sign. Please try to remember that it's okay to feel the way you do. It's normal. I'd be more worried if you seemed too well controlled right now.

I hope you find your mental peace again soon. Don't force it, but don't hide from it either.

We all know you're a real badass tough guy, but even tough guys cry every once in a while.

Never argue with an idiot. They'll just drag you down to their level, and beat you with experience.

Adam, I know you love your MJL yak but.....maybe.....part of putting this behind you.....is a new yak.
One w/o a hundred gouges in it.
I would be willing to kick in a few bucks for a new ride.
It might be easier to fish w/o looking at damaged goods right in front of you.
There's something to be said for the BNG* & a fresh new start. jim

I am a newb to both kayak fishing as well as NCKA. I read this entire thread and I must say I am impressed not only with Adam's story but the class and character of the NCKA members! Everyone was willing to give Adam space when he needed it and then give him all the support he needed, including equipment,  encouragement, humor or what ever else he needed.

Adam, It's good to hear you are doing OK, you have a great group of friends. Keep pushing forward.
