Au , contraire our grand hunter de fishies, a story is also defined as:6.   a narration of the events in the life of a person or the existence of a thing, or such events as a subject for narration: the story of medicine; the story of his life.

A slight thread jack here but I think it's relevant to the subject at hand...

I spoke to Doug over at HMB Kayak Company last week and the Coast Guard stopped by his shop and asked about the incident. Apparently, even though there was no mayday called out to the CC at time of the attack, there was a private boater that picked up the NCKA radio chatter and called the CC for assistance. However, I believe that the boater had no idea where the location of the attack was so the CC decided to go out anyway and do a search along the coast...I believe they use the boater's known location as a starting point to search (via heli). From what I was told by Doug, the CC were out there for several hours before heading in.

Let just clarify that none of our NCKA brothers did anything wrong but I'm hoping we can get someone from the CC to give us some advise regarding protocol....if there is any for this kind of situation.

Joel - I think this a good point to bring up. I think the kayakers did everything right for sure. What to  do when others monitoring 69 over-react is beyond what we control.

Agreed but I think the boater was playing it safe and had good intentions. I think I would have done the same if I came across the chatter. But I also believe that the boater should have tried to make contact with the NCKA'ers before calling in the CC....or even offer assistance himself if he had been near the location...

but that's just me.

on the radio side for such a situation, it sounds like the following might be valuable:

Sometime in 2011 FCC regulations will require ALL Fixed Maritime VHF radios to support Digital Selective Calling (DSC).  This means that you will still be able to buy hand helds which do not support DSC.  It is suggested you do not purchase a hand held maritime VHF that does not support DSC.

Maritime Mobile Service Identity numbers.  An MMSI number is like a phone number for your VHF radio.  Digital Selective Calling allows you to call a specific MMSI or group of MMSIs, basically personal (individual) and conference (group) calls.  DSC and MMSI allow a single button to send a distress call containing your unique identifier and GPS coordinates if the unit supports GPS.  MMSI numbers are free and easy to get

+1 - I've been wondering about that.  Even though there weren't a lot of boaters around, ch69 was sure quiet given the amount of chatter about what had just happened.

I believe most boaters use the scan mode to pick up chatter. Given that it was a nice flat day and it being a Saturday, I'm sure other boaters picked it up as well.

I was not there at the time of the incident but I'm wondering if any other boaters responded to the NCKA chatter? Adam, Chad....or anyone else who was present at the time? Can you guys chime in?

Not a single word.  :smt009

The only ones on the radio were us initially and then we flagged Don and Ty to get them back in.
