one more suggestion - small prize for the person who catches the *most* targeted species!

Ok so I posted my first fish of 2010. It wont come up on the board. Does it have to be reviewed by a panel first? I see no participant list either. Am I being too impatient? Sorry. Never mind I ust read about my question on the other 2010 thread. DOH!

Great Job Job Guys next Nov. Dec. will have twice as many guys scrambling for points. Maybe in some peoples eyes it won't be as Grand  but I think it will be a lot more fun.

Brian is this beta testing or are you guys up north set up similar?

As mentioned previously, I have a lot of respect for the original format and the anglers that have made it into the Top 10.  I feel like this new format in some ways will cheapen the legacy of AOTY ; and no one will be able to compete for the same tournament as the previous years participants did.

But im also excited about the idea of targeting more new species!  And would like to see if this gets even more people to motivated to join in and participate in AOTY!

Just tossing this out there...  How about TWO AOTY's???   :smt003

I've been playing around with AOTY up in the Pacific Northwest for the past couple years (http://aoty.northwestkayakanglers.com).  We've tried more species and decided that 10 was a good number.  The biggest problem we have is that with WA, OR, ID, BC and AK as our domain it's really hard to please everybody.

The nice thing about the NCKA AOTY is that it has been pretty consistent for the past couple years and it seems to work.  In a few more years we could even have an AOTY hall of fame (.. largest halibut ever, most AOTY points in a year ever, most lifetime AOTY points, etc..)

That said, I think you should leave the AOTY fish as they are.  However, if you want any changes to the AOTY website let me know.

"Here comes the 'crappie people'". The Original ten fish are the real O.G's of NCKA. A bluegill the size of my weiner now=the mighty halibut?
As for the argument that more people will enter. Who cares? Instead of catching California's trophy fish we could all just get together and see who can eat the most weiners in 2 minutes.....

No Shame? Or Know Shame?

Well that seems kind of harsh  :smt001 . I had it all figured out too. I figured I'd just plant my kayak in our most populated pond about next October, when the fish are flirting with being too big for market, and just catch fish all day until I had the one I wanted  :smt002

Of course, if I lived next to the ocean, or SF Bay, the advantage would be similar for those species ...  :smt003

Nope, won't be posting fish from our ponds, it just doesn't seem sporting  :smt010 . But I'll probably fish for catfish in New Melones or Tulloch. A 20+ pound monster was caught at NM just a couple weeks ago.

This new format is designed to open up the contest to greater participation, and I have to humbly disagree that the new format will lower prestige for past AOTY champs.  I was fortunate to have won 2007 AOTY, and I wouldn't advocate the new rules if it took anything away from that accomplishment.  The new "best 10 of 20 format" simply gives NCKA'ers, no matter where they live, an a real chance to compete against guys with the advantage of time, resources, and close proximity to the high scoring species (like steelhead and salmon in the past format).

It will still take a lot of fishing prowess, skill, good strategy, and some luck to get into the top 10 this year, but I'm confident that the best fishermen will shine.

Are you up to the challenge?

I don't care what the system is. I paid up for AOTY to help dampen the cost of the website and AOTY effort by Bill & Co. I'm fishing for fun, and I do like the idea of posting the smallest fish since that's what I usually catch anyway. But I'll still post the largest I can get my hands on.

I thought the best way to ruin your hobby was to try and make money at it.  Now I have to add make points with it too.  I paid my money, the new format is interesting AOTY is only 4 years old, I'd hasten to say it is a legacy. Hojo has the right idea.  Bsteves you forgot tule perch.  They're the only freshwater embiotocide. I imagine that most of the top 10 will have the OG species.  I would really like to see someone catch all 20.  We should make some t-shirts for anyone who can do it.  Thanks to the AOTY committee for adding some variety to the format.

Now that you mentioned it, I also forgot California's only native centrarchid, the Sacremento Perch, in the panfish category.  I don't even know if it's legal to fish for these natives.

I'm going to have fun fishing regardless of how many species there are to fish for. Of course, the thorn in my behind has been trying to catch the original ten. that'll still be my goal for this year.

however, i've been thinking about this since chucke mentioned it to me. instead of having a billion species to fish for and throwing in your 10 best... I was thinking that we can throw all the species into a hat and pick the 10 that we'd be fishing for that year for aoty. at least that way, it would be different every single year. little bluegill would be just as important to the race as a sturgeon. there's no guarantee that all the fish included would be an angler's favorite species but at least every fish would have the same "prestige". I don't know... just a thought.

let the games begin...
