Great tips about the road, Kent.  I was going to say the same things - GO SLOW from Redway to Shelter Cove.  There are lots of spots where you'll be in a bad way if you find yourself going too fast or not using low gears.

Scott - I don't think the launch will be an issue.  There's plenty of room for all.   :smt001

I'm asking for tournee format input at this link:  http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php/topic,17849.0.html

I was at the Cove again today.  Since I was down the river with the fam at the in-law's cabin in Phillipsville I went ahead and ran over the hill to check that job I'm working (drying out a vacation home).  Well, it was off the hook beautiful over there.  So flat ass calm in the Cove, and the water quality along the rocky shoreline was near phenomenal - especially for the big storm this past week and heavy water that's hung on since.  There were whitecaps outside, but lots and lots of fishable water.  The most notable thing was the easy 10' of vis right along the rocks.  I was drueling big time for a dive.  I whipped out one of Dom's jigs and caught a black rockfish just slinging it from the rocks for 10 minutes!   OMG...   :smt007

We're getting down to it, Folks.  The forecasts are showing it pretty windy Friday, but the swell is managable, and the N in the forecast isn't too bad - North wind (as opposed to NW or W) sometimes goes right by the Cove.  The water looks to get nicer and nicer Saturday and into Sunday.

Here's a video Domenic and I made that tries to show the way to the Cove.  If you're coming without consulting a map you may need to consult a shrink.   :smt002

Strong work with the directions.

Is the exit off 101 signposted "Shelter Cove" or just Garberville?

I don't believe "Shelter Cove" is on any sign on 101 coming from the south.  There's a small brown "King Range" sign, and that's basically the same area as the Cove.

The very basic written directions are:

- 101 north to Garberville
- Go through Garberville and on to Redway staying on Redwood Drive
- Turn left on Shelter Cove road (may be referred to on some maps as Briceland road)
- Stay on that road until you get to the ocean

I think we should exercise caution when dealing w/the parking situation at the launch. We are visitors and need to treat the area (and the locals) with respect. There is not very much room for parking on the beach—like 30 cars max. And we can expect about 15 cars already (from private boats, crabbers, divers, etc). And it sounds like we’re going to have at least 25 cars of our own.

That said, it would be fantastic if we could carpool/yakpool from the campground to the launch. Maybe offer to transport your camp-neighbor’s yak if there is extra room on your car/truck. Because the other option is to unload yak+gear on the beach, then repark up above. And walking back up the hill to get your car after fishing all morning does not sound fun.

Is there launch access from the Tides Inn?

Just a little more details version:

- From 101N take exit Garberville
- Go straight through Garberviller town for about 4.5 miles
- Turn left on Redway (there is a gas station at the corner)
- Stay on the main road to Shelter Cove (about 22.5 miles)

On a clear day, stop for a break at King Peak and you can see a beautiful view of Shelter Cove below.  From now on it's all down hills (about 2.5 miles) so be sure to use low gear or you might need a brake repair after this trip   :smt009

I recalled there's a small beach to the left of the Tides Inn that you can launch a kayak.  You can call the Inn to confirm this.

When it's nice and flat you can launch and land from the beach at The Tides, but it's not fun carrying your gear up and down the little cliff.  I'll likely land there for lunch/beer break and leave my gear on the beach and go back out again.  Launching and landing from the launch itself is THE WAY TO GO.  I respect and appreciate Sin Coast's perspective on this, but the launch is first come first served parking and everyone knows it.  We can park two deep if need be and that will afford more spaces overall, but I don't feel that we need to accomodate any local need for parking - that's just how it is there.  And there won't be that many people down there without a salmon season...

That said, I'll gladly do some trips up and down the hill (pre-dawn   :smt004) letting anyone sit on my tailgate and Roleez-tow their stuff down the hill, but I don't know where you'll put your Roleez or whether you'll be walking back up the hill...

Seriously guys, this will not be a huge problem, so let's just tackle it when we get there.   :smt001

The kayaks are plastic and not that heavy. My concern is whether or not my truck will pull up the ramp with the freakishly huge lings I'm going to catch.
