Well, Phil, now that you mention it...  they did change the forecast and bump it up a bit, but it's still looking sweet, so I'm very hopeful.   :smt001

Looking forward to my first Shelter Cove trip.

Question for Eric or one of you experianced at Shelter Cove.
How important is it to have Wheelez?
Can I get close enough with a 4x4 while not paying a steep launch fee?
Are we possiblly launching at a location other than the main cove?

Thanks looking forward to meeting more NCKAers!!!!

FACT OF THE DAY:  Wheeleez or Roleez are NOT needed!   :smt001

Welcome to the Final Frontier!  If the tractor launch is operating it's $30 I think for a launch - for a POWERBOAT!   :smt005  No launch fee or parking fee for yaks.  The rule there is "launch from the beach, park on the beach", and there are maybe a dozen or more parking spots right there in the rocks within feet of launching.  Also, with the mid day low tides, there should be some spots on the beach itself too.  Personally, I plan to have a parking spot down at the launch both Friday and Saturday, because I plan to launch and fish at dawn.  The nature of the wind at the Cove is that we may have whitecaps outside by as early as 8AM - hopefully calm and glassy all day, but you've got to be ready to fish early and possibly get blown off the water to other pursuits for the balance of the day.

This video shows the parking spots on the beach.

The forecasts are still looking very encouraging, and, going back to that launch issue, IF the tractor isn't up and running for the opener (the service got spotty last year with the salmon flop...) we'll have the water practically to ourselves!   :smt007

Who else is planning to drop crab traps?

I have lots of rockfish carcasses for bait that never got used last year and my wife would love to get them out of the freezer.

Is there any interest in dropping traps Thursday afternoon or evening?  I will try to get up there early enough to do so (especially if others are interested) rather than try to get them out during the opener.

let me know.

I should be there Friday afternoon. So if someone wants to take and drop my pots for an afternoon soak (while I set up camp) they can go for it.

Thanks to you jerks, I just had an epiphany....sorta.
I am noticing a distinct similarity between my quest to avoid gopher rockfish and Carl Spackler's quest to eliminate gophers from the Bushwood Country Club golf course (Caddyshack).

License to kill gophers by the government of the United Nations. Man, free to kill gophers at will. To kill, you must know your enemy, and in this case my enemy is a varmint. And a varmint will never quit - ever. They're like the Viet Cong - Varmint Cong. So you have to fall back on superior intelligence and superior firepower. And that's all she wrote.

Another good quote:
I have to laugh, because I've outsmarted even myself. My enemy, my foe, is an animal. In order to conquer the animal, I have to learn to think like an animal. And, whenever possible, to look like one. I've gotta get inside this guy's pelt and crawl around for a few days. Who's the gopher's ally. His friends. The harmless squirrel and the friendly rabbit.

I'm not bringing my crab gear, but I'd love to get out there with you Thursday afternoon to set yours - maybe we can bounce a chovie along the sandy bottom for a potential hali on the way back to the launch.   :smt007

I'm in a trance and need to keep myself busy between now and Thursday.   :smt003

If I can actually make the trip I'll bring my crab gear, but the way things are going at work it looks like I'll be living vicariously through you guys.

It sucks, but I haven't given up hope yet.

Wow.  Wow!  I'm pretty stoked right now.  Long-range weather, wind and water forecasts are all looking sweet right now.  Saturday evening may be epic flat calm - the potluck on the ocean is going to be off the hook!  Sunday morning last fishing opportunities for many are looking super sweet, and Friday and Saturday mornings look to be very nice and fishable at the very least.  This also bodes very well for all of us who plan to ab dive/spear fish.  Wow!   :smt007

I can feel the excitment and am looking forward to meeting you all.

If you are not familar with the road to SC especially trailer towing or midnight travelers heads up. The road is narrow and winding with some serious bhatch hills. Go slow and save the craziness for the party Friday night ! Seriously believe the signs you see going down the last hill because the local fire dept has seen it share of vehicle accidents due failed brakes.

I don't want this to sound like a bummer post but I want you all to make it and have a kicking, fish catching, story telling, friend making weekend.
