So, Yakuza-Martin, what'd you decide?  Friend's short-notice wedding or Abking's FreeLove OceanFest BootCamp?!   :smt003

Regrettably, I'm pulling the plug on my GSIII dream.  Will attend my Indian friend's wedding.  I'll think about Shelter Cove when I'm getting "Jai Ho"d in Fremont.  I will make a trip up sometime this year...

The party in SD, btw, was awesome.  But playing tackle football on the beach the day after a late night bender was a dumb move.  Some dude took a header into my left knee, thought I ruptured my ACL or something.  x-rays/MRI's show no tear, just a ton of fluid and contusions.  Relief!  Thought I was gonna have to sell my Hobie and be relegated to upper body propulsion only

Thanks for livening up the thread with some great pictures, Sonny!

3 weeks from now there should be some big grins walking around those places.   :smt003

Blimey, just like that we're under 20 days!?

I have a couple of questions for you local types. Basically, I want me a Pacific Halibut. How likely is this in mid-May? Am I right in thinking Black Sand Beach is my best hope? If so, how far is that from the cove launch? Is there a better launch for accessing Pacific Halibutland?

Finally, roughly what are the chances of catching some live bait in the area? Anyone ever drag a sabiki around?

I realise some of this info may be classified :glasses7:  in which case i promise i won't tell a soul. Except perhaps my wife. Although not until after I've caught a Pacific Halibut for myself.

Here's the Pacific Hali scoop that can be had by just researching pics and reports from the local charter boats down there (because I've never seen exactly where they go...)

"Punta Gorda" is about 20 miles north of the Cove and is known to be the Pacific Halibut destination.  There's no other place to launch.  Pretty bleak, eh?

IMO, there's a chance of hooking a halibut over sand in other places near the Cove, but I have no intell on it.  I say we bounce some of those Storm baits of Danglin's around the sandy spots and see what happens...  One of the biggest roadblocks to catching a hali w/o intell:  they're generally caught in 200' of water, so we're making a mistake to just go to that depth (3 miles offshore or around a canyon) and fish because we'll catch illegal rockfish that will most certainly croak...

The rest of the story:  when we meet I'll tell you (around the campfire w/ several cold beers) all about my plan to get this done properly.  It'll require another trip later in the summer, Roleez, and some 2 pound balls (not lead!).   :smt003

Oh, and just to keep you up at night...  A woman on a powerboat near the Cape caught one over 100 pounds last year while jigging for lings in 80' of water.  It was a RARE event, but keeps hope alive!  Last:  if you've seen my "Thrill Ride" video I think that could've been a big halibut...  you never know what you'll hook, and that's the beauty of fishing right at Shelter Cove.

Man, I'm pumped for this trip!   :smt007

You can catch Jack Smelts and use it for bait at the cove.  I heard from my friend in the cove that someone caught a Hali from the boat launch area last year so there's is a chance that someone from our group will catch a Hali while we there in May.

I'm leaving in June man, it's now or never! (They don't have Pacific Halibut in the UK!).

Sonny - that would've been a Cali-Hali, right?

Phil - we'll do our best!   :smt002

Hey - we could hire one of the local charters for a mothership hali-trip...
