This could be fun.  I've got some eastside plans for most of May, but if the weather conditions look suspect for those will head up.

Sonny - that would've been a Cali-Hali, right?
Hey - we could hire one of the local charters for a mothership hali-trip...

Yes, I believe it's a Cali- Hali.  My friend Lyle from the cove went out with another friend a few year back and caught a very nice size Cali-Hali about 5 mile north of the cove.  I would not be surprise if there's Hail in the Black Sand beach area.

The mothership for Hali trip sounds great if we got enough interests  :smt007

Hey all,

thought I'd pass on info on Pac Halibut. My pop and a couple of his friends pioneered the recreational pursuit of Pacific Halibut in the Trinidad area in the 70's.  They caught some dandy's by drifting in at least 180 feet of water. So, ditto on what ABKING says, they are found in deep water, almost always. Folks catching them on the beaches in shallow water are catching CA halibut, just as tasty, but a wee bit smaller. Had a friend in Alaska in 1990 land a 199 lb pac halibut while fishing in a kayak. Towed him around a cove til he could beach the kayak and drag the flying carpet onto shore.

Great info and big halibut story, Shannon.  That gets the blood flowing!  It's been unfortunate for Shelter Cove and us as fishermen, but... one reason I'm so psyched about this trip is there hasn't been too much fishing at the Cove for several months, and well more than a year if you consider the loss of last salmon season, the closing of the launch, much much shorter rockie/ling season...etc.  We're hitting the Cove right when it's open after a relatively long closure.  Conjure up some thoughts of territorial lings moving up/down the coast into new territory, and just bio-mass gain in resident populations.  Add to that thought the idea that a few halibut, that the locals may have caught in the past rarely and never said a word..., may be hanging out ready for the NCKA barrage.  Oh Lord, I sound like a game-hog now!  I'm excited to fish on the ocean again, plain and simple.   :smt001

I think I have about 5 more interested in the event from walk in customers.
Is there any room left at the camp ground? Is anyome willing to take another person to split the cost of a site? Please let me know. Rumor is that the new Hobie ProAngler will be in and I will be bringing one /crossed fingers  for us to demo, we can only hope.

I am planning on bringing a Trident 13, a tarpon 100, a mesto surf kayak(for the kids to play with), and a 12 foot laird paddle board, as well as my prowler big game.

 Should I change anything?

Two 100-pound halibuts caught north off Shelter Cove last year.  See link below for details and picture:

I think there are plenty of campsites available - I talked to the owner of the deli and campground, Jack, the other day and he's hoping the deli will be open for the opener (they're restoring from fire damage last fall).  He says there are still sites along the back fence that he saved for us, and he has 2 sites in the middle of that area that he is giving us and adding some extra picnic tables for us to party at.  I told him how we have a big potluck going Saturday night at The Tides and he should join us.  I added that The Tides stipulated 10PM ending time, so we'll be moving the party over to the campground at that point!  He laughed.   :smt003

Eric,

you paint a tantalizing picture of a near virgin(is there such a thing?)fishery. Still hoping to make it. Need to break in the new kayak with some fish slime and to hang out with some ripping people. Makes me yearn to smell of campfire, have everpresent beer breath and good food stuck between my teeth.

That's my kind of imagery right there.   :smt007

Here's a fun Shelter Cove story (#93675  :smt003):  A few years ago at one of my family reunions down there in June the Cen-Cal divers were there for a meet.  My good friend Brandi Easter was competing, and she kept me abreast of the details as the weekend progressed.  Many of the divers were there pre-scouting on Friday, and one fellow in particular had a very unique strategy.  One of the most enticing and potentially rewarding spots at Shelter Cove is Abalone Point near the north end of the airstrip.  Even on relatively calm days the swells can pound that area, and that's the reason there are still some great treasures to be found up there.  Brandi reported to me that this one diver had sought out a large lingcod at Abalone Point, and he was feeding it!  She relayed how some of the competitors weren't too happy about it, but it wasn't against the rules, and, really, it was a pretty ballsy move.  The divers were blessed with some great conditions for their competition, and the man who fed the big ling ended up locating it again during the meet and winning the event!

I readily admit that a big lingcod is what I'm after, but I won't be locating one and feeding it first!  If all goes well, the one I catch will get measured and weighed and star in a movie before going back in the water.   :smt001

Here are a couple of pics of Abalone Point from the original Gimme Shelter in early March of '07.

The water is 15-20' deep right off the rocks here.  The place is downright bad-ass.
