Awesome, I'm already making plans so I can have a respectable showing for next year.  I'm very much looking forward to pushing my comfort levels and going places I never would have if it weren't for you knuckleheads.

Want to join but having moral issues about Salmon.
How can we say were concerned if we are still targeting a fish we know is in serious need of protection?
If I join I would at least have to try, and if I catch one there's always a chance for fatality.
Wouldn't it be best to take Salmon off the AOTY roster?
Just my thoughts,
Eric

Don't forget the landlocked salmon inside Don Pedro, New Melones, Berryessa, Oroville, Shaver (oops....Shaver is south of the NorCal border), etc. Those salmon are doing just fine and I'd love to catch one for AOTY.

Thanks S.C.,
Actually forgot about landlocked Salmon
OK I'll have to give it a try.

Eric

P.S.

Shaver is actually in the N.C. borders;

"4. All fish entered must be caught south of the California/Oregon border and north of the southern borders of the following counties Monterey, Kings, Tulare and Inyo."

i was just thinking about the steelhead/trout issue that folks were talking about n another thread.

generally speaking, a big sea run steelie will have better length than a trout of the same weight. so people with better access to steelies will have an advantage over those with trout.

kind of the same thing for the adronomous salmon/landlocked salmon question. since ocean salmon and river salmon will likely be closed/highly restricted with a couple of exceptions (klamath, smith, etc) then maybe we should split these categories out and recategorize the points for them, however with one caveat - only 1 of each species will count towards the overall point total?

for example steelhead at 1.5pts/inch but trout at 2/inch (completely unscientific and just for illustration purposes), so fisherman A catches a 24 inch steelie worth 36 pts, but then catches a rainbow at 20 inches worth 40 pts.  the angler can still be in the big fish pool for each species, but only the largest of the subspecies "trout" will count towards his AOTY totals.

A 10 lb steelie is going to be longer than a 10lb rainbow caught from del valle, but both are very significant catches and should be given approximately equal weight if you ask me.

river/ocean salmon grow to be much larger sizes than landlocked salmon, so those who don't have access to the klamath/ north coast rivers (8 hour drive for valley residents) have to put forth an almost gargantuan effort to catch a competitive fish in the per species pool, much less towards the AOTY title.

In my rookie opinion, no way a 10lb planted rainbow is equal to a 10lb steelhead...  not as much skill, time, effort involved.

But the salmon issue is a good point...  I'm curious to see what the more knowledgable folks here think.

You're right eric, I agree - a 10lb steelie is a lot more effort. but the idea of separate categories for trout/steelhead has been floated about and I would think this is the fairest way to do it so that those who can't go chasing steelies to be part of the individual fish categories.  the actual ratios towards AOTY should be decided by those in charge of course.
