OK,

It's great that guys can boost about catching 20 stripers per day.  But, as "MolBass"once said.  Once, you got your limit..you must fish for something, else.   Because a normal fisherman will try to get their limit, first.

I say...just say you got your limit..... because it does no good...it says you could be pooching.

Because, if you are catching more than your daily limits and how do you know the fish you released don't die.  Then, that is called "Want Waste".  If you duck hunt or any other kind of shooting sports for live game.  Then, that is what it is.  You might think that you are doing C&R...but, you are harming our sport and the future of our sport.

As soon as I got my limit.  I stop or try for some other fish.

I like the ethic behind your words, Ken, but I don't believe that it applies to all occurences of catch and release.  There are fisheries such as trout, bass, nearshore rockfish...etc. where care can be taken and a reasonable assumption can be made that the vast majority of released fish are unharmed.  Going further than that, there are individuals who wish to develop expertise in the area of releasing fish unharmed, for the sake of the sport, and that is an admirable thing in itself.  Seeking that kind of fishery to do my C&R fishing will be more of my ideal than trying to only catch what I keep - the latter sounds boring and feels like it misses the point of sportfishing.  Just my $.02.   :smt001

Did you really just compare C&R fishing to duck hunting?  Fishing and hunting are two different sports with two separate sets of regulations.  As far as I know, "shoot and release" hasn't been an option since the days of the passenger pigeon.

There is a difference between keeping a limit and then continuing to fish for that species (illegal) and catch and release fishing.  You are allowed to keep fishing until you keep that last fish in your limit.

Now if you have a moral or ethical problem with catch and release fishing that's your choice.  As PETA likes to point out... "Fishing Hurts".

That said, there certainly are things a catch and release fisherman should do to reduce mortality... keeping the fish in the water, using barbless hooks, not over playing the fish with light tackle, etc..

I agree.  This is outlined in the DFG site under several specific regs:
  • "if the daily bag limit for black bass is five, anglers that have four black bass in possession must decide whether to release the fifth fish and continue fishing, keep the fifth fish and release a previously caught fish alive and continue fishing, or keep the fifth fish and stop fishing."

As far as your "normal fisherman" quote... that's open to interpretation.  For example, if bass fishing, I never go for a limit or even keep one.  When rockfishing, I typically go for bigger fish and smaller healthy ones are released.  I believe most "normal fishermen" on this board do the same.   :smt002

I say...just say you got your limit..... because it does no good...it says you could be pooching.
I'm sending this quote off to be deciphered.  Once I figure out what the heck you're talking about... I'll let you know my thoughts.   :smt011

As bsteves said - why the heck are you comparing C&R to duck hunting.  Duck hunting is very similar to spearfishing.  It's a practice of "release before catching."  By being selective, you doesn't pull the trigger unless it's what they want.  Once you hit your limit... you're done shooting.  C&R vs. duck hunting - apples & oranges.   :smt102

As soon as I got my limit.  I stop or try for some other fish.
Good job!  If I had a gold star, I'd give you one.   :smt001

It sounds like you're anti-C&R.  Please correct me if I'm wrong, because I have a hard time understanding what the heck you're saying half the time.  If that assumption is correct, my response would echo bsteves' sentiments.

I don't "boost" about anything and I certainly don't "pooch".  Nor do I "Want Waste" or "Want To Waste" because then that would probably be "Wanton Waste".

Who's been catching 20 stripers anyways?  Must be that guy who ate the Cabezon skin and is hallucinating because of it.  If it was me, I'd probably be "boasting" about it.

Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

If someone catches 20 stripers, odds are they weren't all legal size.  If you get into a school of 16" fish you could catch 20 pretty quickly but have to release them all.
