I will be contacting Ocean Kayak for a chance of getting one at at least cost.

If needed, getting an OK essentially at cost will not be a problem.

There was a side bet going on last year between contestants that nothing to do with the event itself.

I did that side bet last year. It was $10 for the biggest rockfish, no cabbies, geenling or lings. Tote won $170.00 with a big red. I can put it together again if anyone wants. We could even do biggest cabbie this year maybe. I thought it was a fun side bet. It would probably help to know ahead of time who wants to be included. I think a few people missed the bet last year that wanted in. It was a last minute camp to camp collection. Let me know. It paid for Tote's gas and burgers last year.  :smt004

An event to raise money to watchdog the process that seeks to limit sport fishing should be in any tackle manufactures interest.  me thinks.

After my writing career got started in the early half of the `90s, Pacific Fisherman magazine publisher Pete Barana assigned me several non-kayak fishing features to build my writing skills.  One of those stories was on shallow water rockfishing.  I took Dan Dunlap with me, the maker of Jax Jigs, who gave me a SWRF lesson in a few days out of Morro Bay.  He talked about the Jax Jigs originator, the canabalistic nature of rockfish???? and the color patterns of the jigs that are similar to rockfish species.  Plus, the construction, weight and fishing technique of the lures that is all unique.  The whole shebang is different from traditional rockfishing by using light line, smaller reels and smaller heavy lead lures.  Today, when we are barely able to fish 4 1/2 months a year with shallow water restrictions and smaller bag limits, these lures are more relevant than ever.

Researching an article today, I was surprised to learn that Jax Jigs are still being manufactured by Dan in Arizona so I called him to chat.  Long story short, I can get the jigs some press next year (unrelated to NCKA) and he's sending a few sets of JAX Jigs for the Albion raffle. I ordered a bucket of 4 and 6 oz lures from Fisherman's Landing Tackle in San Diego for myself  (not even Hi's carries them anymore) and will post my first ling and cab and let you know which ones work for the big reds.  Jax Jigs are a lucky find sold through a few online stores and mostly So Cal tackle shops, the Northern dealers dried up years ago.  I also have some Kokatat pants and tops and a few assorted higher end fishing accessories to donate once the organizers figure out the prizes.  I'd long intended on sending swag for past NCKA events and welcome the opportunity to forward promotional product for Albion.

Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

Craig, thanks for taking charge, and if I may be of assistance let me know.  Whatever it takes to get YOU on the water, we'll get it done.

We don't want you getting burned out and bailing on us, hear?

Great job guys.!!!

As for the three fish combo to win - three fish , Yes, but It would be sad to catch a second big Ling or get lucky with a Butt or WSB and not have it count. A swap meet aspect with members selling their hand made lures or gaffs or trading extra rods, reels etc etc for stuff we need would be cool too.

In the game of biggest fish, if you can't enjoy routinely gettin' your ass handed to you, by great fishermen, then you don't belong in the NCKA.

Thanks for stepping up to make it happen, Craig and Jack! I trust you guys will do what is best for the club and the tourney; you have my support.
Now let's see if I can actually go this year...my wife brought up the idea of renewing our wedding vows while camping w/friends this summer (5-yr anny on 7/30). So...I better start stockpiling WAF now!

It will be the biggest 3 fish out of lingcod, greenling, cabezon and rockfish. 1 fish from each category totaling3 fish/ overall weight.

Do you have to have 3 fish or can 2 fish still win if it's heavier than any 3 entered?

Yes Mike. Like a 20 pound ling would probably do it. I hope not but thats how it could go.
