I am planning fishing for next weekend, wondering whether have the same interest guy to go together, below is my plan:

1) At Oct/8 Saturday 05:00am arrive SC harbor, 06:00am leaving harbor to Monterey Bay, the distance is 22 nm, will reach the destination   about sunset time, trolling salmon or tuna all the way to love point. I knew the chance will be very slim to zero, but who know
2) Camp on the kayak at love point area, next day the Sunday, trolling halibut to the south side of Monterey, and at afternoon landing at Pebble Beach, then call uber to SC, drive car to Pebble Beach, load kayak and go back home
3) I will use AI or TI for this trip
4) the whether is very good for next weekend Monterey

Anyone is interest to join me?

I only have one PLB, don’t have other radio talkers, I have had one radio talker before, but feel like only within one mile it work, more than that it useless, after I lost it, never buy again

Any recommendations for good radio talker? Thx

If you really serious considering this fishing trip, I might can borrow you my AI for this time use. Just don’t have the trampoline and Hobie MirageDrive, I lost it at ocean last time. If you have drive, my AI can use, it’s quite new, made at March 2021. I am waiting for parts currently

Radar reflector? Sorry I didn’t see it before, it is for what purpose? To extend  the radar signal to longer distance, or for what?

It's so a boat can actually see you.. your kayak will not ping on radar well if at all without one.  In the fog its the only way a boat will be able to see you...   you will deffo want a radio too..

The first leg of your journey is right across where hundreds (not joking) of boats will be dragging MadMacs at 15 knots every weekend for the next 2 months.

Xia-

No offense, but I'd advise you 're-think' this trip.  You do not sound experienced enough or prepared at all. I wouldn't attempt a trip like this myself. Chances of catching a salmon or a tuna anywhere on that route are slim to none right now. (Well, maybe a salmon, but not in the middle of the Bay.  20 feet of water next to the Santa Cruz Wharf is holding some net-pen fish right now.)  I'm wondering if perhaps your post is in jest, even.

You were planning it without having a radio?  Not aware of the effective range on your "radio talker?"  You don't know what a radar reflector is?   My sincere safety advice is, fish your butt off in the ocean for the next year or two, short trips try different wild locations and conditions. Get a feel for how challenging the ocean can be even on short, near-shore outings.  Always have a buddy with you as well as all safety equipment. (Plenty of threads on this forum regarding safety stuff).

To put it bluntly, this idea sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.  Check into your local Coast Guard Auxiliary group.  They offer seamanship instruction that covers a fairly broad range including safety, navigation and maritime rules, regs and law.

HI christianbrat,

Thanks for your information, usually where will you put this radar reflector? Looks I cannot put on the top of my sail mast without special fixture, I use sail for fishing trip, always pull out sail and roll up often in ocean.

It is still work if I just put on my Kayak Hull, its too low to be effective?

Thx
Xia
