i think if guys want to fish as far south as hopkins-lovers point then head there first thing and dont fish til you arrive there. north of the aquarium and the bouys. because the wind will come up and it'll be a pain later.

that sand north of the hopkins reserve was where i hooked a late season halibut at 41"  when you see yellow bouys, stay south of them and thats the spot.

if you go further south go towards land and thats all reef structure and lots of lings there.

if guys are still catching whitefish at the red mile bouy then there is a chance some larger whitefish are around, those get to a couple of feet long.

i think if the water surface is around 64 then fish shallow and maybe go for halibut, if its cold at the surface it'll be colder down below so i'd go for rockfish , lings and whitefish.

if you head towards lovers point stop at the mile bouy for sanddabs and load up on bait. lings love those.

if i could make this tournament i'd love to do this route:

get in the kayak and check water temps.

if its cold i would hit the mile bouy for maybe whitefish , bait and head past hopkins reserve to try for halibut.

if thats a no-go then i'd go for rf and lings closed into land and less than 50 ft deep. those reefs hold a lot of fish.

as the day goes i'd work my way back with the wind behind me and drifting past hopkins (no fishing zone) and anchor on the numerous kelp fields and drop for rf and lings, maybe calicos.

then the wind will give you a free ride back to mbk! yahoo!

How do I tell a Whitefish from a juvenile WSB?
Saltwater is the cure for everything that ails us,
sweat, tear or the sea.

I Pre-registered a couple of weeks ago and cant wait. Am driving down Friday at 2 or 3, would like to find a site, never camped or fished here, and fish on Sat.
I would go with Seabreeze's list with the addition of thresher and leapord.
BTW, wow that was some biga** salmon sharks you guys wrangled!

The anal fin on a whitefish extends all the way down from its anus to its tail. Whereas, a WSB does not; it has a much shorter fin.
When I searched the archives, I saw that alien and marmite caught a few from MBK last summer too.
Here's the one I caught last wknd. You can see the long anal fin. There's also a crazy blue stripe that runs lengthwise along the fins.

This may be my final post prior to the derby.  I'm going to Monterey tomorrow morning earlyto fish, then will hang around there and sleep over for sunday morning.  If you have further questions, post here, and I'll try to access from the MBK computer.

Sign-ups from 6-6:45am at the MBK shop.  Everyone including those who pre-registered have to sign a waiver form before the derby,  6:45-7am we'll have the pow-wow on the beach prior to a Gran Prix launch.

We will take sign-ups again after 7am.  Weigh-in starts at 11:30 and ends at noon.  You have to be on the beach and in the line for weigh-in by noon at the latest or you are out of luck....so plan accordingly and navigate well.

Good luck to everyone, I am getting pretty excited for Suncay morning, can't wait to see everyone wespecially the winer of the new Trident!!
