DOOD!   You know you've been fishing alot when you run out of GAF.

Either that or you're seriously considering converting your GAF into WAF sometime soon.

Whoa...GAF crisis.

We'll miss you Allen!

Here is a basic pic of the fishing area with  a few notes.

right out of MBK, there is a kelp bed to the right.  I usually fish outside this kelp bed toward a couple small "can" buoys in 60-80 FOW.  tons of rockfish caught there as well as lings and occasionally a halibut.  All the way down to the right is the "Hotel," halibut hunting grounds...thjat;s where Chef caught his 25# flatty two years ago.  Along the kelp bed itself inner edge and outer edge can be productive for schoolie rockfish, I've seen reds and chinas out of that area as wel as lings, and I hear tell of flatties along the inside edge.

Straight out, towards cannery Row is another Kelp bed that I've been fishing more lately.  Good sized rockfish and that's wehre I caught the calico's earlier this summer.

I've had luck with shrimp fly jigs, mega-bait type iron, swimbaits, large sabikis for the schoolie rockfish, and of course whole squid or anchovies on the rat trap rig in this whole area.

Be careful by the aquarium, there is a reserve there marked with a bunch of small white buoys--No fishing inside the buoys.

Past the Aquarium I'm sure there is good fishing towards Coral St, but I've not vetured there as yet.  Maybe SacYak or MByakker or Aaron can help give some tips.  Just remember, further you paddle out, the further you ahve to paddle back, so the further you go the less fishing time you have.

If I were competing, I would head towards the Hotel and gamble on a flatty, but leave enough time to hit the kelp[ beds on the way back to MBK in hopes of a Hail Mary Lingcod.

Thanks for the fish entry votes, we are still taking suggestions on this topic.

Allen

Allen,
I sent you a PM. I've never fished the Monterey area, so I'm completely lost for a starting point. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm coming down Saturday to check things out and help get a lay of the land and water. Launching, fishing grounds, and camping area suggestions would be a great help.

Thankx Jonesz

DOOD!   You know you've been fishing alot when you run out of GAF.

Either that or you're seriously considering converting your GAF into WAF sometime soon.

I've fished something like 24 days out of the last 6 weeks.  And I have fishing/kayaking events 3 out of the next 5 weekends (which she doesn't completely know about yet!).

If I converted GAF to WAF, I would have run out a long time ago.

I agree with Seabreeze on the eligible fish.  I'm not much of an early riser, so it's hard to promise, but I'm hoping to be there with time to spare, and if you see me, put me to work.

So, this is Seabreeze' list again:

RCG, Ling, Pacific Sanddabs and other flatfish, Ocean Whitefish, California Sheephead, calico bass, white sea bass, striper, salmon, perch

Basically, all the typical, regular, edible, sport fish. No sharks or rays except threshers or leopards, since ots of people eat them...?

this sound all right to everyone, can we word it more succinclty?

what i want to avoid is  hurt feelings or controversy prior to go-out, so if you have an opinion, now is the time to voice it.

otherwise we'll go with the above....

There are some nice calicos and rockfish being taken near the kelp along the row and off the yellow buoy, but I have a good feeling about 'buts being in the area with the warm temps and lack of swell we've had this month.IMO a big 'but or ling will win the derby.I would start drifting whole squid and or live anchovies on a halibut rig with two rods and switch to one rod if I hooked a contender ling or rf.
Good luck to all and have fun! :smt006
