I talked to Tara at MBK this afternoon.  We have 30 anglers pre-registered for the event.  Awright!!!!

I'm stoked we have 30 and would love to see 90 for this event!.  But, I shudder at the thought of registering 60 guys prior to the event.

Please, if you are planning on attending, call MBK and pre-register.  I'm getting nervous about having to register a bunch of anglers before the 7am start time..Everyone has to sign a liability waiver.

In order to facilitate, I plan on being there at 5am to take names, and run registration till 6:30 or 6:45 at the latest.  Still, I'd rather spend that time meeting people and shooting the s**t, listening to the smack.

Everyone can get their boats ready on the beach and we'll have a pre-release pow-wow right before the derby start at 7am.  Everyone hits the water at 7am....What if you are late?  We will still accept registrations after 7am, but you have to be registered before you paddle out to be eligible for the derby, and no registration while the pow-wow is going on, roughly 6:30-7 or 6:45 to 7, like that.

Weigh in starts at 11:30 and it ENDS at NOON.  If you are in the line by noon for weigh in, that's OK, but if the line is long and you show up at 12:15pm, sorry, no-go.  We gotta have a cut-off time, part of effective strategy is to start back with enough paddling time to make the weigh-in and keep it fair.

All DFG rules apply, including the multiple rod rule.  If you are fishing for halibut and have no rockfish aboard, you can fish with 2 rods.  One rockfish on the boat=one rod only.

Heaviest weighed sport-fish wins.  The question came up "what about sharks and rays?"  Tara was not sure so opted for DFG "gamefish" definitions.  In past derbies we have excluded sharks and rays, interpreting gamefish to mean the 'edible' gamefish that we typically catch and bring home for dinner.  I'd like some comments on this, sort of a "group conciense" on how we should do it.  Allow sharks and rays, or not.  Leopards only (since some pepole eat them,?) Or, just no sharks or rays?  (FYI, I've never caught sharks or rays by MBK, though they might be around....What I would call no dice on personally would be a dogfish or the like....)  Let me know please how we feel about this, It is a community event, so I'm happy to go with the community opinion.

1st prize=brand new Ocean Kayak Prowler Trident!  The boat will be ordered, so you can select your color as available.

I believe Pole-pole and Mooch will be there helping out before fishing (neither are eligible for the prize, but ARE eligible to go out and have fun)  Ernie, thanks for the volunteer to help.  Anyone else volunteering will be appreciated,  We'll run out during the event to buy dogs, and sodas, but any cervesas you will have to provide for yourselves.

I am particularly stoked because this will be my first day paddling my new Trident,  It shipped and is sitting thee at MBK for me.  I'll be at MBK Saturday and stay overnight, and will put the boat together then.  (gotta buy a battery.......or make another battery pack......)

Please post your replies on this thread now, so I can check it for comments and quetrions as we ramp up to next Sunday.

TL.

The only question I have is: What color Trident should I order after I win this thing?  :smt002

Sharks and rays should not be considered.

I agree with Bill: RCG, lings, halibut, salmon, stripers, and white seabass.

Wow, Allen, you're gonna outfit your kayak the night-before?! Let me know if you need to borrow any tools.  :smt044

thanks Bill- don't want to exclude starry flounder or calicos.....a possibility and a probablility, respectively.

PK....My Trident will be the "Cadillac" model, so I don't have to mount the FF, transducer, or front rod holders, just unwrap and put the rudder together and fit the pieces together.  I'm stoked!

For those of you who have not fished this area, I'll post a map and some tips on where to fish and what for.....

I'm not entered so I don't have a "dog in the fight" but you guys might want to allow Threshers since they are a possibility this time of year.

Ya, upon further thought, maybe include Calico bass, sheephead, and threshers/blues. Although all of these are rare...it IS possible.

Aaron caught a few calicos down there this summer, and so did I on separate occasions.  Over by the kelp bed near Cannery Row.  Fun fish!

Lack of GAF will prevent me from attending.  Something about fishing TOO MUCH lately.  Damn, I don't think I've ever really run my GAF dry ... until now.   :smt013
