I haven't posted for a long time, but I was trying to see if I could find the thread regarding the shark attack that Fishunter experienced years ago.  In particular I was trying to find the video that someone made after the attack when Fishunter paddled up to a pod of kayakers.

It seemed that he is no longer on the site now so I couldn't post him.  Wonder if someone else might still have that video on file.

Thanks,

Doug

Fishing Adict,

Thanks for finding the thread for me so quicky.

I was reminded of this event by the recent attack at shelter cove.  Also recall the pictures I took of Dan's attack at Bean as well.  I was one of the last of about 18 to come in that day.  I had visions of that opening scene of that lady swimming in the opening scene from Jaws as I paddeled through the area where Dan was hit. I wanted to be as thin as possible atop my kayak. My pics show the same damage as recent attacks.  If I recall, Hobie got that kayak from Dan ASAP and replaced it with a new one.  Hobies were just starting to show up in kayak fishing back then, and I think they wanted to grind up that yak and make sure no further pictures were distributed that might suggest the peddle yaks bear a greater resemblance to seal flippers.

Eric, I'm surprised anyone even knows my name anymore it's been such a long time since I have been active on the site.  Shoulder problems ended my kayaking as well as spending most of my summers at an RV site in Prattville and fishing from a boat on lake Almanor.

I have gotten a bit board fishing up there as it's pretty much trout, trout and trout.  There are some fun bass as well.

But I really do miss my years with NCKA on the ocean.  So much greater variety and always the excitement that you never know what you might hook up.  I had so much fun fishing with Alex V. and going to the derbys at Monterey, Elk, Lake Mendacino and later, Shelter Cove and Albion.  The friends I met were great. I just wish I had started kayak fishing 10 years earlier so I could have enjoyed it for a longer time.

Take Care.

Doug

I think I was the last one in that day.  It was my first time kayaking on the ocean, no vhf, and I landed at pigeon point blissfully unaware anything had occurred!

Eric,
Interesting that you picked Bean Hollow to initiate your experience on the ocean.  For years I had heard from others that Bean Hollow was a treacherous launch site.  It has a steap drop off and if the tidal change is bad, you can get pounded on the way in.  I had heard that one of the really strong, experieced kayakers got hammered coming in and didn't kayak for awhile.

So I would never have gone there except that particular day was supposed to have such excellant water conditions that I thought I would try it.  That's why there were 18 of us out there that day.  I guess it was just meant to have an alternative form of excitement.

After some time on the water, Joel calls out on the radio, "Hey guys it think Dan just got attacked by a shark!"  I radioed back, "Are you just kidding Joel?" He was always joking around.  He said
"No, I think he was!"

So, you picked a memorable day to start out on the ocean Eric.

BTW, Good memory Fishemotion.  I actually think I am in all three of the pictures you posted.
In the first picture i'm almost in the center, facing the camera and next to the orange paddle.

In the second picture I think I am again near the center with my back to the camera.

And in the third picture I am in the left corner kneeling down.  I can tell because of my orange and black Kokotat dry suit and the type of PFD I am wearing.

Do you have the picture of all of us lined up at the end of the class?  I tried to find that shot but it's lost on some old hard drive somewhere.

It's interesing to review those memorable experiences from the past.

You two must still be active on the site I assume since you must monitor new postings right away.

Take care,

Doug

Whats up Doug! Good to hear from you. Those first 2 attacks on Dan & Adam seem like a long time ago...but they always stood out to me. Since then, I bet there’s been 15+ documented GWS attacks between Gaviota & Shelter Cove. They seem to be happening more frequently. Makes me want to fish Lake Almanor haha :-)

Pat,

Nice to hear from you. I'm sure all the sharks love the growing hoard of seals that gather here.

For some reason, when I saw your post I flashed back to the time that Alax and I were fishing at Monastery Beach and we were tracking you as you paddled close and parallel to the the shoreline. Funny how certain things just stick in your memory.

Fishemotion, thanks for posting the thread on the MBK Fishing and Safety cloass. (Is there a way to get pictures without photobucket watermark?}

I enjoyed reviewing the  pictures and remembering the experience, but I was saddened to see the pictures of Aaron.  I recalled the number of times I fished with him and what an enthusiastic and helpful guy he was for a newbie to the sport. I bought my Prowler 15 from him.

It was nice to review the legacy left on the site by friends that knew him well.

PS: I just realized that the two group photos were on Aaron's post so I guess there's no way to get those unless someone else has them.

Hi Adam,

I had seen a local news report of the Shelter Cove Attack and it reminded me of your close encounter.  I don't routinely monitor the site so I probably missed all the more recent reports.

I sent an email to my brother and sister with the article on shelter cove.  My sister emailed back and said she was glad I'm on a lake now as she'd heard sharks particularly like Chinese. I was trying to find your thread because it was the only one I recalled aside from Dan's.

I was going to show my sister the actual effect that a close encounter can have with that video.

It's so funny how you can mis-remember something.  I had recalled viewing you shaking like a leaf and repetively saying, "f...f...f...f...f..."  I got it all wrong, you were really fairly composed--a few choice expletives are certainly excusable under the circumstances! :smt003
