Nugging futs! I'm relieved to hear Adam came through this so well. It sounds super-sketch, worse than other recent kayak taxings.

Someone brought up the fact Adam was fishing alone. Way back I asked shark researcher Sean van Summeran about shark strike avoidance. He pointed out that humans run in social groups for a reason, and suggested sharks would be less likely to hit one out of a group. Of course if that recent Big Sur run-in was with a great white, numbers didn't deter the shark from checking things out.

Glad you are OK. Talked to Chuck yesterday and got the whole story. Lost some sleep last night thinking about it. Sounds like the shark used the verticle "missle" attack and not even a shark shield can probably repel that. Like Dan's 2007 attack, the shark seemed to be more interested in the kayak which was good. I wonder if it would be better to stay away from the kayak until the shark loses interest. That would be tough not to hang onto the yak but if the shark is focussed on the yak and you have a stringer of fish hanging in the water maybe being a few yards away would be good. As I remember from Dan's attack, he climbed back in and was knocked out a second time. Maybe some shark expert can say which would be best. Anyway, I bought Eric B's shark shield and you and Chad can buddy up with me anytime you want to fish the Bean. May not stop a missle attack but will probably repel them after the initial attack. Sorry about the lost rod and reel.
