IOne.. to show off my catch, two.. to document the trip and memory, three.. there is nothing more badass (in my mind) then holding up a monster fish or a limit of fish. Re

At least you are honest bout why you post.. All you are trying to do is stroke your ego. Good boy.

No one really cares about your limit, or your big fish. They're hoping to get one of their own.

I'm thinkin' spots are burned already. "Hot bite burnin'" is a different story...it's good to know lots of slayers...pier slayers, yak slayers, boat slayers, charter slayers, commie slayers...all are a phone call away and these relationships have to be built, not just used... :smt006

No, it does not mean I've never read a report. But I do wish many reports -- even those that I benefit from -- never were posted to begin with.

If there weren't so many people in the Bay Area, it wouldn't matter, but we have 8 million people within an hour's drive of the water. How many of them do you suppose might want to catch a fish from a kayak? Pulling numbers out of my ass, I'd guess that at least one person in 100 would think that sounds pretty cool. So, that's 80,000 people who might want to fish from a kayak. Then (continuing to pull numbers from my ass), let's say that half of them might actually do it. That's 40,000 people. Now, for the sake of being conservative, let's cut that in half to 20,000 people within an hour's drive of the water who might have the wherewithal to get a kayak and follow an Internet report hoping to catch a fish. That translates into crowds.

Dude you ARE tripping!

Reading through all of this, I'm like, "glad I live in Humboldt."

But then it occurred to me that the beaches are insane up here right now too.

It's a covid thing, guys.  For real - people have flocked to the beaches, and it may even be the case that your average kayak fisherman actually has his/her shit together well enough to have time and resources to go fishing during this shitshow.

That's what's up - people are getting to the edge of the continent and willfully tripping with the sharks because shit on land isn't that appealing right now.

Also, I liked what I think 3$ or Motherlode said about if you had to hike and wheel and work for hours to get to and fish a spot maybe no one would bother.  I have an answer for that one - Yes, it's true so far for the most part.   :smt001

I have been able to 'burn' spots for almost 16 years on this site because I live in more remote part of the state and I'm not doing things that are automatically easy to get on.  That said, I have always been an advocate for the sharing - it's what community is based on.  If we can't figure a way to share, then we're done.  I get the overpopulation thing - not sure how to counteract that.

Move away from people, probably.

I've lived in the Bay Area my entire life, and it used to take 15 minutes to drive from Santa Clara to Palo Alto, and that was only 10 years ago. There's 1 Million more people in just the triangle of SF OAK and SJ since 2010, 2 million since 2000.

I've only been on NCKA a year, and I've seen people get mad at spot burning, mainly only TLA, and anyone else that mentions Bolinas+youtube.

and I've seen people get mad at people not posting any details of their fishing trip, other than a picture of a salmon limit and a smile.

I'm still meeting people, fishing with them for the first time, old to the sport, and new to the sport, and I don't feel like I'm spot burning inviting someone new to go with me to a spot they've never been before.

that said,

"Wide Open BITE CLICK HERE"

vs

"Bolinas, 50 FOW, 30 OTW"

I prefer the second one.

I'm going to continue to share, if for no other reason to give back to this site that's helped me get into a healthy productive hobby that gets me outdoors and appreciating what is around me that much more.

Hear hear Eric.  We have this forum to cohere as a select sliver of humanity. Fish together laugh together cry together help each other as a community. Hot spots are often only hot for a few days or so anyway. If a spot looks to crowded that day, go fish another.  You might be surprised if the fishing is better! Kayak fishing is my preference because of the low eco impact, exercise, and rugged individualism. Somewhere above it was mentioned that 40 kayaks trolling might 'put down' a salmon bite.  I highly doubt that.  Tiny silent floaters above with one line as opposed to growling behemoths displacing tons of water a wake half mile long, and eight wires trailing and on outriggers.  Yeah, that might disturb a school....

Coming from the "scouting" tradition myself, I have few qualms about letting people know where I was what I used how I used it et cetera. I like to share.  I like to instruct. It's been my MO since I started.  Im not the first kayak angler in NorCal, but I never saw one other kayak angler for three years.  When I did, I paddled over 1/2 mile to say hello, my name's Allen what's yours? That was Mr Green Jeans, or bluejeans Brian Gardner. Met # 2 a year later he was not even on a kayak!  But we met to fish at Garrapata soon after, got blown off the water before 7am, and "Discovered" Stillwater  South later that morning. Steve S, Coach Steve-O, Steve doesn't Kayak Fish Anymore. (but still an exalted member of NCKA.  why?  Because we're cool man, and we care about each other and we TAKE care of each other.)

Everyone's allowed to chime in with their opinion here. Some long-time members sorta get irritated when a relative newcomer wants to debate. Debaters carry less authority when they never post about their fishing trips (with pix).  Instead of arguing, my suggestion is, GO FISHING!  Then, tell your story here and post some pics and make some new friends and go fish some more.  Rinse lather and repeat!

There's been a couple threads regarding OTW courtesy lately.  I believe  in practicing courtesy OTW almost always. The ocean's a big place even working just off the beach like us. There's plenty of room. If it's too crowded, move.  Who knows karma might kick in and give you a trophy (that you can post and brag about here....Kinda like I do LOL).

Eric's right about the Covid impact.  More people are coming to the beach for the free fresh air and open space.  which makes are beaches more crowded, the space less open, and the air more potentially frightening.  I'm seeeing lots more peole baeching it lateley even compared to 'regular' summertimes.  Plus I believe a pervasive fear subsumes us all these days, and often the result of fear is to'fight.'  Flight (to the beach) then fight (on the forum).  HA HA. I'll do my best to keep my side of the street clean. Let's all try to lighten up.  How so?  See above^^^  GO  FISHING. Kayak Fishing.  Troll, burn calories   build endorphins.  Eat fresh healthy food high in Omega 3 fatty acids.....

I could go on, but I have to watch some kung-fu movies now.

For example, was posting a hookup for the Pacifica area a good idea? Hard to say in these times. It seemed to have increased the pressure on the area. That said, my intent was safety, try and get a launch buddy kind of thing. Now that I’ve been, I know the area will have other boaters when the fish are in, perhaps no need to draw extra attention, even if it’s for the purposes of finding people to launch and land with.
Hey Mother Iode,

This is snazzy, red AI, I was the guy with my dad that ran into you at the launch.

I know you're just mentioning a quick example. Just wanted to say that, even prior to your hookup, many had the intel about the hot bite at Pacifica. Coastside, Facebook etc. It was already blown way out, hence my arrival at 5:00 a.m. that morning.

On this topic... I'm guilty of benefitting from others sharing reports. But I always try and give back by giving reports. Bite info. I just share what I feel would be appreciated, not everything.

I just feel many are blaming the wrong things. This sport is growing, population is growing. What you fear is inevitable. Cherish it while you can, and I get it's hard to not get mad at the next guy but it really serves no purpose.

I try not to think about it too much and just fish.

It's really interesting seeing this from both sides. Being a person that wants to grow the sport but seeing the damage that is being done.

I still remember my very first few posts here. People replied pointing me where to read and post hookups/reports. I always appreciated how this online community helped me to grow and I keep telling myself I need to give back. Obviously, people here have changed.

Definitely a Covid thing or at least it has a big part in it. Just look for example on biking. Bike shops are selling out. Bikes on trails, streets are everywhere now. Same with access to beaches for fishing or just getting out of the house.
