Hey gang, I learned of this from my buddy Nick.  Please see the link below, RE an emergency CDFW meeting that is discussing the potential shutdown of the sport fishing season due to Covid-19 concerns.

Most of us certainly have the time to participate in this virtual meeting:

When:            Thursday, April 9, 2020 at 8:30 a.m.

Where:          Via teleconference and webinar. Members of the public will have the opportunity to comment on the proposed emergency regulation by calling (877) 402-9753 or (636) 651-3141; access code 832 4310. Webinar details are on the agenda.

More:             The meeting agenda and documents are available on the Commission’s website at https://fgc.ca.gov/Meetings/2020

Personally, this is kind of baffling to me, because almost as a rule, fisherman may be friendly and social creatures, but we are not keen on being within 3 or 4 yards of anyone, other than our kids, when we’re fishing.  If we understand that we MUST maintain social distancing or the season could be forfeited, then it seems like a bad idea to remove a means of putting food on the table, which thereby takes pressure off of other food supply chains.

So here’s the larger point, we are a very large organization and there is no time like now to express our views with the authorities who are considering changes to how we recreate and feed ourselves.  Please participate in the call-in.

I'd guess at least half of the regulars on this board are in favor of a complete shutdown.  I'm personally disappointed in every single one of them.

I dont think its ok to travel outside one`s locale to fish, but to shut it down ,No.
I wonder if there’s a run on “local only” stickers right now, but officer...didn’t you see my sticker?

Public health officers in several counties have ordered lodging and campgrounds closed and imposed a 14 day quarantine on anybody coming in from out of the county staying at second homes or the like.

That solves the problem, no?

If they add paid snitches like the LA mayor implied they’d really cover all their bases...

seriously. Seems like that ought to take care of it.
This seems more like a power grab than an actual concern for health.

serious question : How would you verify how long one has been in the county ?

First off, convenience of law enforcement is never a good reason to curtail a constitutional right.  Like Ever.

Second, you could ask them then follow up with investigation.  You could probably even install license plate readers along the highway entry points in the county, a lot of those already exist.  Probably not in Mono or Inyo County, but I reiterate the first point.

If you really want to fish then invest in this "Resident Commercial Fishing License   $149.09   Required for any resident 16 years of age or older who uses or operates or assists in using or operating any boat, aircraft, net, trap, line, or other appliance to take fish for commercial purposes, or who contributes materially to the activities on board a commercial fishing vessel."

We can outsmart Newsome! Lol. All in all, this is very serious. If you fish keep it local and keep it off social media. If you enjoy fishing that you absolutely have to do it then absolutely keep it to yourself. We can protect each other as well as nourish our souls. And even with all this chaos think of the ecosystem. There were probably a 1000 ling cod that were saved just on the opener. Less fishing equals more fish.

Most often times this is how democracy starts to falter and become a dictatorship. It's a natural progression of governments.
Freedom/Liberties <------------------>Safety/Security ; finding a balance between the two is what has made America great. The founders knew this and so they broke up the governmental powers. Founders didn't trust gov't to look after the best interest of the people in the long run; thus they wrote in the second amendment.

Government is a good thing, when there is proper checks and balances put in place. When entities start using "safety/security" to bypass our checks and balances I would very cautious. Once an entity "has" power, they rarely are willing to give it up. The last time we lost of our freedom and liberties to a tyrant (king of England), we paid will steep price in blood to get it back.
