James, a few of us (Chuck,Bob, Stuart and Fred) did some late night crabbing inside the HMB Harbor years ago - but that was the extent of it. I heard that Kayak fishing in the Bay is not allowed and so are most of the local lakes  :smt011 I think Kayak Connection in Santa Cruz does a full moon paddle....not sure if kayak fishing is part of their thing.

I'd be interested in doing this - on a nice full moon with others around  :smt045 Would be nice to see what an evening bite would be like.

It is certainly do-able. I know MBK does a midnight paddle tour once a month in summer (or, at least, they used to).
As long as you don't have to worry about breaking swells, it should be fun.

i did paddle around the inside of the kelp area one night at Santa Cruz on a real calm day, hardly any wind with almost flat water. felt kinda creepy at first but then got used to it. did it for about an hour or so, i don't think it was a full moon.

the next full moon is on 6/30, that's on a Sat, so what do you guys say we'll plan around that weekend? of course weather permitting. in the mean time, we can gear up some night fishing necessities.

as far as where we can night fish, i'm not aware of any reg for Santa Cruz area. we can also launch right from the wharf, much better than trying to launch in the surf at night. i know SC has been pretty slow lately during the day so i'm really anxious to try it out during the night. we probably shouldn't go too far though, but i think it's definitely doable.

let's keep this thread alive :smt004

The main issue would probably be the wind, usually it kicks up around the middle of the day and doesn't die back down until the middle of the night.

I would like to do this as well.  I'm thinking maybe the New Brighton/Capitola area looking for WSB...I hear they bite at night.

Not sure of what the regs are, though, might be illegal......this ios what I found in the regs...looks OK, then?

(Copy and paste did not work, basically they say no "hours" restrictions unless otherwise noted for finfish, except in SF bay, where it's legal one hour before sunrise and one hour past sunset, except from piers or docks)

ps:  wind often dies  in the evening in Santa Cruz, esp as summer progresses...we call it "the evening glass-off"

A night time excursion would be pretty cool.  I'd be interested if we get a group.

Would a light be put out, like I do when I fish at night for trout, and crappie?

Sure you can get them at FW they are called "Great White Lites" :smt002

SC harbor or New Brighton sound like great ideas, I'd like to try either.  Sunset launch sounds pretty nice.  Maybe that's where all the fish are becuasue they're sure not around in the day.

Not to be a punk but it is illegal to fish in the bay at night. Dumb rule but a real rule...

Brian G, where is that place? How far is it from SJ, if you don't mind, I'd like to come along if close enough.
