Before I go out and buy something that only works once, I'm hoping to get a some recommendations on brands and models of harpoons for Hali.  The KUFA Sports Halibut Harpoon appeals to me at $85 with a SS head, but I see they sell what looks like the same thing for $46 apparently the head is not SS.  Danielson makes a wood handle model for $39.
Any advice would be great.

How many pacific halibut do you plan to catch? Because you can’t use it for regular CA halibut. I guess what I’m saying is buy a bigass net and a floating gaff. Because those tools seem to be more reliable & commonplace than a harpoon.

I was watching Rudy T's video yesterday on 127lb Pac Butt posted about 1 month ago. That made me realize how strong they are. So without a harpoon that is more of a CnR rather than risking to harvest the fish. Thanks for the thread and I am eager to hear more about it. Btw, they got some quality pac butt last week on Full Throttle.

could you use a speargun instead of a harpoon? only difference is it's propelled by bands.

Haven't fished for Pac. Butt's in the Yak yet, but fished with Gary on the Sea Weasel in Hum. back when he bought his first harpoon after we lost one around 100lbs using gaffs.  Plan on yacking for Pac. Butts in the future but not this year.

Presently fishing for Cal. Butts & carry a bigass net and gaff.  I've seen others using flying gaffs or a spear/harpoon with a detachable head for Cal. Butts.,  I'm reading section 28.95 and 28.20, I don't see any mention of flying gaffs or detachable heads.  Sounds illegal, think I'll stick with what the code says (bigass net and hand gaff), unless someone can point out something different?

I ordered a gaff online, really unhappy with the quality... I should of built my own.... MY BAD......

I've seen videos of PAC butts using tarpon release gaff attached with a float  to help in landing....

But those Gaffs are $$$$$$$$$$

How many of those common and reliable tools are used to land monster pac halis from a kayak? I'd think if you're going to give a serious try, you'll want to have the right tool for the job...

I landed a 45lbs pac hali that way. It was a mistake and I should have used the harpoon.

Has anybody here ever used a kage or poon to assist in the “take” of pacbutts from their kayak? Just curious.

That must have been fun to catch one that big on a kayak!
