The warranties cover manufacturers defects, not accidental breakage or user error. That's pretty much what all warranties do, right?

Rods break sometimes. It sucks, but it's usually our own damn fault... I snapped a beautiful, nearly brand new St. Croix Inshore rod a few years ago when I got careless on a surf landing at Muir and my boat rolled in shallow water right after I hopped out. It seriously sucked, but I wasn't about to make a warrantee claim for my own mistake.

I've also snapped rods doing stupid bassmaster hooksets, pulling on snags, etc...   The fact that the rods hadn't snapped yet when I used them correctly was a good indication that there weren't any manufacturing issues. It was my own fault they broke.

A little background on why manufacturers are shying away from liberal lifetime warranties...

Long story short, the liberal replacement policy was abused to death. It's the same thing that happened to REI, and why they no longer have a super-liberal lifetime replacement policy on outdoor gear.

People abused the privilege - they bought gear for trips then returned it when they got home. Or bought rods then snapped them so they could get a new one or try something different at no charge.

This i completely agree with. I'm really sad that people abused this. It was a great piece of mind to know the manufacture stood behind their products 100%.

While this may have contributed to more conservative warranty policies, it's not the only reason. I bet the larger manufacturers have entire departments of employees that are charged with reducing non-operational expenses. The straight salary of these penny-pinchers probably exceeds the lost margin on thousands of 'warrantied' rods, and they have a job to do.
So, the notion that these large-scale international manufacturers are absolved of blame for adopting more stringent warranty policies (because of their own customers' greed) is an extremely clever marketing narrative. The situation is now framed as if the MFG's didn't want to cut costs & increase their bottom line...at the expense of customer loyalty. Kudos to them, I can't believe it actually worked! They get to retain customers AND charge them more.

In regards to the X-11 and most of the low to midgrade Lami rods....see attached photo.

I'd guess that corporate greed probably matches that of the consumer, after all we're all people.

I guess I've never had a rod break that I honestly could say was my fault.  At the same time I buy my rods in person and online. I examine them as thoroughly as I can to find defects.  Look at rods at walmart.. its hard to find one that hasn't been damaged or have a guide miss aligned.  If I find any defect in the rod I return it or simply don't buy it.

only real warranty claim I've done is on a pair of waders from redledge.  I have their sonic pro's and say 3 months after the warranty was up the zippers messed up on both my and my brothers waders.  I called them explained everything and they agreed to replace them for $40.  Given its a $400 pair of waders (I bought them on sale for $199) but they replaced them with the newer versions that now sell for around $500.  I was happy.  I hope that if I encounter a true manufacturing defect the manufacture would make it right.

I've also seen where manufactures, especially high end, stress test every rod they make.  If they can't break it in the factory under normal use how can we.. shipping damage?  stress test every new rod in a normal/ proper way.  if it breaks send it back as damaged during delivery.  At least you know you have a good one from the start. if it breaks later on.. probably not a manufactures fault.

Also, F u Cabela's lifetime stupid guarantee.
I agree with bmb about the sneaky warranty.

Lamiglas be like: Let send this rod to me, and I'll do my best to say it's a user error because I could.
Just in case I feel good when I inspect your rod, I might say it's manufacture defect then you only need to pay $25 for my mistake.
F u too Lamiglas.

You sound as if all rods hardly any manufacture defect. When you crash at Muir that's for sure user error, while my case is not clear.
How do manufacture determine if one is a user error honestly? It could be a fatigue for sometimes there already or it could be me smashing it.

It's a reader decision to go with makers you feel comfortable with. Be warned though about their warranty.
I post this thread up because I was treated unfairly from Lamiglas.

That's a bummer I have had pretty good experiences with lamiglas I have like 10 rods  by them and am pretty stoked on them., I just bought my girlfriend a little  7 ft X11 trout rod to replace a fenwick that broke after one use.... super frustrating. At least the X11 is much better anyways. Sorry for the bad luck hope it works out
