I skipped the middle eight pages.  Pedals might give a little extra advantage, but paddlers regularily win derbies anyway.  Sails and motors?  Nope. why?  You're not paddling anymore.  Or peddling.  Using your own power to get to where your fish is.  If you can't paddle or pedal, you're at a disadvantage. Add a motor and you're not really kayaking anymore. If you need a motor they work way better on a skiff. I reccomend a good 'ol two cycle for that belching black smoke.

I can't aim, so I don't enter archery tourneys.  (Can't pull the f'ing bow back either)

So, is the problem a kayak purest (sic-Purist) thing or excessive advantage?

Yes

I am new here and new to Kayak fishing, but I wonder if this exact discussion wasn't played out when the first peddle kayaks showed up?

:smt003 That discussion is ongoing. Pedal driven Hobie Mirage Drive craft were reportedly introduced in 1997.

Those new E-bikes are gaining popularity. Do you think they should be allowed in bicycle races?

There have been cheaters who use electric motors hidden in the seat tube to drive the cranks.

Some good info here for folks interested in using older-model trolling motors in saltwater.  Would you trust these motors to get you back to port safely?

Kayak with 2X4's, crab float ama's, and a 9hp 2 cycle.......I've seen it.  Had to look away.  I'll tow you in if your Hobie breaks but that guy needs to call Boat US.

(Disclaimer:  I would wait nearby till the rescue boat got there).

You're not comparing apples to apples.    If it was an event where bicycles were used to hunt mushrooms,,,, would you find more mushrooms because you had an electric bike?
I don't think  Fishing skills are compromised by using an electric motor anymore than a pedal drive gives  an advantage over a paddler. Probably less of a difference if anything.     One of best things I like about the Simply Fishing tournament.    Everybody is on the same level.

Would never go out with just one means of propulsion...  Hobie yaks always have a paddle as back up... Same goes for a motorized yak

Same goes for my paddle kayak too. Always have a spare in the hull. 220cm Carbon fiber spare. No need for too much extra weight.
