I looking to pick up a pistol within the next couple weeks. At this point I'd like to go with a 40 cal because of ammo availability and price. I would also like to stay around 500$ out the door price.
My main focus right now is on the xd 40 with the 4" barrel it's gonna come in at $534. Including my saftey cert. Any other guns I should be looking at in this range? Tia

I didn't like the way the XD felt in my hand.  Got the Sig SP2022

.40 is a great choice.  I am retired law enforcement, and I came to love that round.  There are many hot 9mm loads out there too, so the differences in ballistic performance is probably not that significant.  The .40 is definitely more zippy (recoil) out of smaller handguns.  I am a Smith & Wesson fan, and I went with an M&P Shield.  But, I carry concealed, so I wanted small and thin.

I have had a Walther p99 for many years CC as if this year as I'm getting older, feels great, shoots straight, a little big for concealed carry if your not like me a guy with large shoulders  :smt002. Take down and cleaning is easy. I'm not sure on the newer models, (mine is first generation) but I have no safety but can unload the firing pin so it's a double action trigger pull to fire, it has two places where you can use your finge and thumb  to "feel" if it's got a round in the chamber and the hammer is calked as well as visually seeing the two indicators easily. If you know anyone that has a particular model you like see if they will let you test fire there's (that's why I got the Walther). Good luck and early congratulations on a hand gun.

You can get a police trade in Glock 22 for less than $400 out the door

$319 w/ free shipping to FFL, and you're under $400 with tax, fees, etc.  You just have to buy magazines because they won't ship the 15 rounders to CA.  Many of the trade ins come with upgraded sights too.

I would recommend a G19 Glock (9mm) or a Glock 27 (.40 cal), both guns handle well and ammo is readily available. I have G21 .45, and a G27 .40, which is what I prefer to take when I'm out hunting and fishing in remote areas. Good luck!

SIG 226 is a great full size platform. I have the 40/357sig. You just drop in the barrel you want. Pretty slick. Smith and Wesson m&p is a good platform for many. Look on calgunns.net lots of good guns there. Most people are workable on price. I usually buy used firearms, and would say have a gun smith checkout the gun before you buy it if you go used. Price should be stable with the President Elect.
I only fish on days that end with Y

Glock.  Trigger work is easy to do yourself.  Glockworcks parts and a trigger travel adjustment guide, and you're golden.

Thanks for the recommendations I'm gonna go check some out tomorrow, but looking at gallery of guns looks like the shield or xd.might be the only thing close to my price range in Cali.

If I had to buy one more gun this year... it would be the Colt Commader!

It's a little more pricey than what you wanted to spend and a slightly larger caliber... But it's a great carry gun! A light weight 1911....

Plus after December 31st 2016, yiu won't be abe to buy one in California  again ...

Got the last one in the Bay Area!!! Hehehe

Ditto on the S&W M&P Shield 40!  It's tough to beat for the price, weight and size.  Good for a carry pistol, downside it doesn't hold 10 rounds.

ive shot the sig sp2022 and i think its just another economical gun.  had a few ftf, so it just didnt work out.  my buddy who owned that gun sold it to buy a glock 19 (9mm compact )  if you must have a .40 and are okay with a compact, get a glock 23.

.40 in my opinion are very high pressure rounds that may be hard to stay on target if you haven't trained with it a lot.

with a glock 23, you can buy a barrel to convert it to shoot 9mm.

id highly suggest trying out several guns before buying.  as sebast mentioned, a cz75.  i tried the cz75sp01 and i fell in love.  during that time, i wanted a .40, but opted for a 9mm after trying out a few guns.

if budget is less than 500 i'd suggest saving up for something 600+ because that's when it actually gets good, anything new under 500 is for the economical market.   and resale value will drop a lot faster.
