+1 on the Glock 23/22/34, you can find a used one under $500 plus easy to switch out to a 9mm if wanted to.

Cz75 are great but it would be out of your budget.

I like the M&P as well because of the interchangeable back straps. My daughters like them better than the Glock because they have better grip.

Btw, conversion to 9mm are also available on the M&P.

Thanks again for the recommendations now I'm really leaning towards the g23. I've emailed a couple shops for quotes so we shall see.I really like option to go to 9 or even 357sig. I was and have been set on the xd for years I'm sure glad I asked and didn't jump on it.

Sig Model SP2022 @ $488 would be my choice in 40 cal; which also has aftermarket barrels in 9mm (and using the same mags, it holds 12 rounds) & 357. I have its older brother, SP2340 Blueline (over 15 years old) and its still my favorite shooter, my go to!

I plan to get its buff'd brother (alloy frame), to give my 2340 some rest:

Do you have a link for the .40 to 9mm conversion for the SP2022?  I have been unable to find one.

X2 on the CZ75. Fits me like a glove. I shot one in the open class during my USPSA days in a 9x21. Same frame/ grip for the 40. Barrel is lower in your hand for a more controllable recoil. They are not on "the list" but you can find used ones. I Cary a Ruger LC9.

I have an LC9. I like the size, but that thing has a long trigger pull.

If you are dead set on that specific caliber, then check out the XD and M&P Shield. Find out which one feels/fits best for your hand size.

Looks like Bar-Sto doesnt make them anymore for the 2022; my bad.

I got mine years ago for my 2340; the predecessor to the 2022..

I know they make it for the 229... :smt007

Right now both my carry pistols are an XD tactical , and a Glock, while i can conceal both, they are bulky. i am ordering an M&P Shield for my new carry pistol, my son just got one and loves it.

My feeling on a good .40 is that there are a lot out there. I personally own Glocks for my .40's and I will give you my reasons.

Easy to work on.
Barrel swaps are relatively easy and in expensive.
Modularity, something many other gun makers have missed the boat on.  I can take the magazine from my glock 22 and stick it in my my 26 compact, or my 27 sub.  by a .22 kit and now I can remove the slide and drop in .22 slide and now I am shooting .22 lr. Switch barrels (aftermarket) and I can shoot 9mm, or .357 SIG.

Now if you really want to blow your mind get the Glock 21 in .45 ACP, you can go from .22 to .460 Rowland, with 9mm, .357 SIG, .40, 45 ACP and 10mm as options. Show me another pistol that has that much variety.

Want to turn into a carbine, can be done!  Oh and many of the newer  AR Carbines are coming set up for Glock Magazines, so there is that! I know of no other pistol with that much to offer.  Try a Glock, for that matter try them all before you spend your money on something. Find what fits you first,  can acquire the sights easily, and feel comfortable with.
