My GF just pointed out to me that I need more Comedy and less politics, SO I removed my last post and am going to watch "Life in Pieces" on CBS at 930 pm.
The IT Crowd is quite funny and so is Blacks Books.  Short series from the BBC.  Did you ever watch Better off Ted?

C'mon now Alex. The term isn't offensive and has been in use for a long time, although I've always heard it attributed to Lenin not Stalin. But whatever. Madeline Albright called Trump a useful idiot just a few months ago.

He's just saying that you are not critically examining the consequences of liberal immigration policies before defending the party line. That you are doing it without prompting from the leaders of the movement makes you a "useful idiot" in the eyes of the leaders of the movement you blindly support.

The problem I have is that I'm 99% sure that you knew that already and chose the victim route anyway. C'mon man.
Yes. I am familiar with the term, and yes, the term in and of itself is not inherently offensive. What I find off-putting is the fact that you guys are making some wildly inaccurate assumptions about me and my beliefs, then slapping me with the catchy label of "useful idiot". In that context, yes, I find it very offensive.

I have better things to do, so I'm moving on...

I didn't say anything about it, someone else did.  I happen to agree with the premise of liberal immigration.  It's the libertarian and humanitarian in me.

It was only 3 generations ago that the US had strict immigration criteria and imposed it coldly and without regard to the consequence.  The US turned away European Jews Muslims in droves, under the fear of spreading communism terrorism and with open and blatant anti Semitism Islamophobia.

The result back then was hundreds of thousands of people are now dead who would otherwise not be dead.  The Nazis did the executing, but the US literally sent Jews back to Europe with the knowledge that they would likely die at the hands of the Nazis (see, eg., MS St. Louis).  In total the US brought in about 200,000 Jews between the rise of the Nazis and the German declaration of war on the US.  During the war the US disregard for Jewish refugees was deplorable, refusing to accept hundreds of thousands of Hungarian Jews that the US by that point knew were going to be murdered.

So for me, if we really mean "Never Again", we have to give refuge to the Syrian and Iraqi women and children and men beyond fighting age.  The ethnic cleansing and sectarian genocide happening there compels us here.  To do otherwise is to be complicit in genocide.  We've been down that road before.  Never Again.

Of course the refugees should be vetted.  But they should be made safe first.  And no one should be turned away without consideration, sent somewhere to die at the hands of their oppressors for the sin of having the wrong ethnic background or following the wrong sect of Islam.

BUT WHAT ABOUT PARIS?  Well, some inclined to do harm will probably slip through.  Others with no such intention may be turned once they are here.  That is an acceptable risk when it means saving hundreds of thousands of women, children and elderly men from death.  You already know my thoughts on gun control.  Make attempted mass murder an extremely dangerous proposition by arming everybody who wants to be armed and minimize the damage.  I realize that this makes us all foot soldiers in a war against genocide.  I would not have it any other way.

Gotta go with Alex on this one ..Dress it up any way you like ..kind of a Rose by any other name thing ..definition of idiot is a stupid person ,not naive ..just sayn'

"Useful Idiot" has been a political term for at least 100 years and means something very specific.  The word idiot has evolved over time to mean something a bit different than it meant back then, and in Russian no less.  Maybe something is lost in translation for those that are unfamiliar.  Alex is not unfamiliar.  He is also quite capable of having this discussion.  If he doesn't want to then fine, but don't blame being butthurt over something that isn't worthy of being butthurt over as the reason that you are picking up your marbles and going home.

Not butthurt. Not bitter. I just have better things to do than "debate" a bunch of guys who are just as solidly set in their beliefs as I am in mine.

Cheers!

Sorry we have different views on gun control because an upstanding citizen with no criminal background should be encouraged to learn how to and conceal carry a gun "an armed society is a polite society " "gun control means hitting what you aim at". "The only way to stop a BAD guy with a gun is a GOOD guy with a gun"NOT sure who originally quoted them but they are true in my opinion.

Where did you read that I would disagree with you?  I mean, I could nitpick stuff like "the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun" which of course isn't true, it just happens to be the best way. That's about the extent of our disagreement tho.

NOT wanting to argue but I hope your not saying the joke of a justice system works and can actually stop a bad guy with a gun? If there where armed citizens at any of the recent mass shootings the outcome would have been different, a little bit of a speculative statement I know, but have you ever heard of a mass shooting at a shooting range? The mass shootings were planned and carried out at places where guns are prohibited for the most part.... I have read several news articles on would be armed robbers taken out because there was an armed citizen present. Analogy from another post on here... dudes trail cam was stolen from a tree.... you think the guys going to steal it from the store? No they have security..... as do I, if someone pulls a gun to do harm in my presence I'll defend myself or anyone else they intend to harm. Just my $0.02 and we're all entitled to one as we are entitled to keep and bare arms.

Or you could... I dunno.... maybe at least TRY to prevent that "bad guy" from getting his hands on a gun in the first place? Like maybe we shouldn't allow him to waltz into a gun show and waltz out with an assault rifle? Seems awfully logical to me.

Nobody is walking into a gun show and walking out with an "assault rifle", or ANY gun for that matter, in CA. Do you really think that happens here or are you referring to other parts of the country?

I would rather have a gun but if all I had was a rock or a brick or something I'd try that, and it might work.  If we had 50 guys with rocks at the ready it would definitely work.

I think you might be reading too much into what I'm saying, or maybe making an assumption about me that because I support liberal immigration that I am also anti gun?  Not sure.
