Glad you made it back okay Raydon!  Last time I went crabbing with the LS brothers the wind and outgoing current from the jetty got me and pushed me right into the rocks.  Had to call in call in the quartermaster for a tow.  Very nice folks.  Scolded me for not paying attention to the red flag warning that they put up by the dock.

Ray I'm so happy you're ok.  One of my worst times ever getting back in was in that exact same area. I remember having to switch off between pedaling & paddling due to fatigue from fighting the wind speed, current, & cross chop.

What part broke exactly? The mast or just the fin?
What cause that?
So you can learn from it.

happy to hear all are back home safely. quick question. did the CG send you a bill? curious because i know paramedic will send some crazy bills.

From talking to the CG a few times, that only really happens if you do something extraordinarily stupid and piss them off.

Even "extraordinarily stupid" wouldn't be enough to generate a bill.  It would have to be a hoax or false distress call.  It's CG policy specifically to NOT charge people under any conditions other than a hoax.  Otherwise, financial considerations would keep people from reporting their conditions and seeking help in the early stages of distress when it's easiest to manage. In the business world, time is money. In the search-and-rescue world, extra time can mean someone's life. The Coast Guard wants to hear from you as soon as you begin to get concerned about your ability to handle the conditions you're facing on the water.  The response could be anything from just actively monitoring your situation via radio in case it gets worse, to asking other boats in the area to assist, to sending every aircraft and boat in the area.

This is a classic case of a cascade of events and conditions that could have ended up very bad. It is almost never any single event on its own that causes a perilous situation.

Calling for help once that cascade started was absolutely the smart response.  And, a great real-world example for others.

Thanks for sharing.

Glad it came out OK. The pics are upside down though. Was that part of the problem?

I tried to correct the photos a couple of times.  FU## it.

I gotcha.

Thanks for sharing.  Like everyone else gotta say glad you are OK.....What do they call that?  the law of compounding problems?   I have to remember to buy another hand pump.  I had one, never used it, but it disappeared a couple years ago.  Your post reminds me to be as prepared as  possible.

Wind is brutal without all the other mishaps.  Great reminder to be prepared and call CG before things get worse.  I know many who would not have but that was the best move.

Glad to hear the misadventure had a good ending.  Next trip out for me and my AI I will definitely look inside to make sure Murphy is not hiding and messing with my gear.  Coastguard is one thing , but to be rescued near the beach by a girl .... :smt003

This exact thing has happened to me once in the exact same place. Only difference is I didn't call for help. I was able to paddle straight to cannery row. I took a break the hugged the coast back to mbk. Glad you guys made it OK.  :smt006
