Damn Raydon, glad to hear you two made it out of there okay!  This story really highlights the importance of carrying a VHF on the salt.

This illustrates the risk, small risk, on depending on the Mirage Drive for propulsion. Mechanical devises do break at times. Sail power also had downfalls as Raydon described the event. A good paddle and a spare are the most sure way to make forward progress if one is in a kayak suitable for distance paddling. The A1 is not. If you were in just the Adventure hull, no outriggers, and the drive broke would you have paddled in OK under the conditions you described?

Hey Ray,
Glad you're ok! It sounds like you kept your cool while handling several setbacks, and ultimately prevailed where most people would have failed. One time I stayed out too long at the can and the wind came up, it was all I could do to make it back into mbk. See you on the water soon. Mike

Thanks for sharing the tale!

Did you call a MayDay or PonPon?

And... after my paddle mishap earlier this year, I tossed my collapsible paddle (useless) and now keep one of these in the hull as a backup:

Glad you are OK Ray.
How did the sail unfurled?  The cleat didn't hold the small rope tight?

I was fishing on a remote part of the big island with my dad in April. We went 8 miles down the coast. On the way back the wind whipped up some frothy bow eating white caps for us. He accidentally left his hatch open on his adventure island kayak and it filled up with water. The boat was too heavy to pedal or paddle so he tied a rope to his waist and jumped in and towed the boat a few hundred yards to shore. He was lucky that it was not an offshore wind. I was so far ahead of him that I didn't see this happen. It took him a good hour or more to swim the boat in to shore to empty it out. I'm sure given the option he would have taken a tow. Glad you made it back safe.

So add fins to your extra gear.  Mine are usually onboard anyways.  But with the wind we have been having even swimming it in is impossible in certain locations.

Pan-Pan
Definition: The term used to signify an urgent communication; the second highest priority transmission.
Pronunciation: [pon-pon ] • (noun)

Usually notice heard from the USCG of a boat with trouble, or a person in the water. It's a notice to all boaters to help if they can.

It's pronounced with a French accent.  However, you are not required to fly a white flag.
Madie, pronounced mayday, distress.
Pan pan, pronounced pon pon, urgency
