I was just browsing thru the GSX thread and reading the blurbs about dogs.

It brought back a memory from 50 years ago that is still just as possible today as then.

When I was about 10 we were fishing at a lake in the Sierras, just bait fishing for trout.  There was a family not too far from us and we heard the kids screaming and crying so we ran over to help, not knowing what to expect.

We found a puppy flopping around with line coming out it's mouth. They had baited up with salmon eggs and laid the rod down and the puppy had immediately chowed down the bait hook and all, so it was basically gut hooked and in pain.

Last we saw of the family, they had cut the line and were headed to find a vet.

The thought of it turned my stomach then and still does 50 years later.

Just something I thought I'd throw out there.

One of the many reasons I don't use bait.

But my damn cats go nuts when I am tying flies, so I gave them a couple pieces of deer hide and squirrel tail to play with when I am tying.
So long and thanks for all the fish!!!

Not only bait, but I've seen dogs jumping and biting lures at the beach including one that got hooked in its mouth...  :smt011

I almost hooked my dog one day because the wiggly jig with swimbait attached was too tempting to play with. I make sure my dogs are away from the hooks now.

I can't fish around my GF's chihuahua. Her old room mate used to tie cat toys on a pole and play with him, so now he is ruined. He thinks that fishing poles mean play time. Even 5 years later.

All comes back to being a responsible pet owner. Dogs are just like kids, stuff happens in the blink of an eye.
Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

That would be the absolute nut worst. So much rage.

When I was about 12 my grandparents dog swallowed a 2-hook rig of chicken liver. We were at lake Berryessa and had to take Maggie to the vet immediately. It was my uncle's line...he set his rod down to help me with something, and next thing ya know, his rod is dragging across the ground. Dog was fine after removal and lived another 8-10yrs. But it was a valuable lesson that I'll never forget.

This ^^. Sister had a bottle of advil in her purse and my husky found the bottle, took it outside and played with it. She later bit open the bottle and ate all the yummy sugar coated tablets. 2 days in the ER and a coma later, my dog was back at home alive, well and stupid as ever.

Yah, I almost hooked him camping. Had my rod back getting ready to cast, with  a worm and dropper on the sand, and he came racing up at it like he wanted to kill it! Luckily we went for the weight, not the worm. He'll attack a caught fish too if you don't watch him. Little rat! :smt003

Careful if your dog comes on your fly fishing trip. My cousin's German Shepperd ended up with a dry fly in its eyebrow

In the game of biggest fish, if you can't enjoy routinely gettin' your ass handed to you, by great fishermen, then you don't belong in the NCKA.

I've had various dogs eat part or all of my lunch, in one case including all the plastic bags which contained the lunch. This left me hungry and cranky.  And I have a friend who has a dog which likes to lick the slime off pike which we catch, and then carries them around in her mouth.  But fortunately, so far I haven't hooked a dog.

Not hook related, but certainly fishing related.  Don't let your dog eat the dead salmon along the river post spawn.  Salmon poisoning disease is fatal to dogs.
