The guys recommending 7mm for kayaking are flipping crazy. With a 7mm wetsuit I would die of heat stroke before I ever make it to the fishing grounds.

The following is a very comfortable setup at a pretty low price:

3mm farmer john with front zipper
Kokatat tempest pants
Some kinda neoprene boots
rashguard top with synthetic layers (wx depend)
Paddle Jacket

I tend to agree that 7mm is excessive, but hey. We're all different. I sweated enough in my 4/3 (and even more so in my 5/4/3) to know that I can't handle much neoprene when I'm baking in the sun.

3mm Farmer John for me. I would rather have light weight gear on me than warmer gear hanging around my waist or stashed. Don't leave your yak!

So nobody wears waders?   Jim Sammons made a video on Youtube that shows you wont die if you fall in, at least from drowning.  Hypothermia is another story.  Warm clothes under waders?

Not in the ocean. Freshwater all winter long.

Is this because in a lake or river it's more likely you will be able to make it to shore if you get separated from the kayak?  And in the ocean one may have to be in the water a long time before rescue?  Thanks

Waders are not a safe alternative if you're going out in the ocean. Period.

Waders discussion from 2008, with input from Sammons: http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=11698.0
And again in 2010: http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=28620.0
Some good info.
Thanks for the historic threads.  Ill read them.  For you veterans out there that still respond to the newbie questions let me say thanks for your patience.  And understand that in most boards like this there are mostly beginners looking for the same answers over and over.  Veterans can get frustrated, but imo it's okay to rehash old debates.  Technology changes and it's fine to go over it now and again.

The 3mm FJ wet suit I think is great and found out by trial and error many times SUP in Capitola. Falling/ getting in and out on a nice summer day with no wind was great but longer periods submerged and any other conditions I would consider another option/ as many have mentioned you always can take off layers.
