It really depends how you spend your time in the water. I do a lot of salmon trolling these days, which means hours upon hours of pedaling non-stop. With the wetsuit, I'd paddle until I get sweaty and overheated, cool off, then repeat. By the end of the day, I'd be really dehydrated from all the sweating, not to mention very stanky...

With the dry suit, I stay dry. When I'm done fishing I can take it off and go on with my day without necessarily needing to run straight home for a shower.

I just ordered a drysuit and was wondering what you wear underneath it. And, do you often need to adjust throughout the day? It would seem like a real pain to strip off something from under the drysuit...
Are you pondering what I’m pondering?

I wear heavy Smartwool thermals top and bottom, and some Smartwool socks. I've also worn a thin "micro fleece" top on a few cold mornings.

It does get hot some times, but i can pull the neck collar out a little or open a zipper for a quick minute if I need to. Sweat wicks out and evaporates pretty good.

I also wear some NRS neoprene booties over the dry suit socks.

The Kokotat Angler "Paddling Suit" is pretty easy to get on and off. It's not that hard to strip or add a layer if you need to.

Just curious which booties you use. I'd like to find something that's has a fairly rigid sole, if such exists, as I need to wear an orthotic (otherwise I'll have some pain on the bottom of my foot).

I've occasionally stepped on a rock or such and wished my booties had tougher soles, so after that kinda problem for the last 25 yrs, I finally just stuck in a pair of the fairly hard plastic inserts like "Super Feet".  Works great,

I have been wearing NRS ATB wet shoes. Not sure if I like them yet... I have semi-wide feet, and they feel a little tight across the top when I have them snugged up enough not to move around when peddling.

Those NRS ATB wet shoes look great---I'm definitely going to check those out.

Btw, is there any place local (S. Bay or Santa Cruz) that might carry these? It looks like REI has some NRS booties, but not this model.

I got mine on Amazon. Not sure about local places.

Didn't know you could get them with zippers already. And none of the ones I was looking at or came across had them.

I went with the NRS boundry shoe because of the high top, idea was to keep my feet warm add dry, and I can launch most places without getting my feet wet. They have a pretty high rating but I did have to send 2 pairs back to get one with zero leaks, and then I ended up putting some rigid inserts in for support, and now I'm happy with what I've got,

I probably wouldn't recommend them even as good as they look in the catalog.

How do the sizes run, compared to regular shoes? I think REI has some NRS models (but not the ATB), so I plan to try some on there before ordering, but just wondering if anybody has any advice.

I use the NRS "Paddle Wetshoes". They have a flexible sole, but it has some good tread. You might be able to upsize a little and fit an orthotic in there?

Keep in mind the NRS sizing is kinda funky. You might end up needing to go a full size or two over your usual shoe size.

Are you dealing with plantar fac.? Back in my days working at an outdoors store, we sold a ton of Superfeet to people with PF. They loved them.

The guys recommending 7mm for kayaking are flipping crazy. With a 7mm wetsuit I would die of heat stroke before I ever make it to the fishing grounds.

The following is a very comfortable setup at a pretty low price:

3mm farmer john with front zipper
Kokatat tempest pants
Some kinda neoprene boots
rashguard top with synthetic layers (wx depend)
Paddle Jacket
