I just received the farmer john wetsuit I ordered and it is a 3mm. Would this be ideal for the nor cal waters or should I move up to a 5 or 7mm ? I also picked up some neoprene 7mm boots since my feet and cold don't mix well the rest of my body isn't as prone to getting cold like my feet. Thanks for the inputs.

While I use a 3 mm suit (NRS Ultrajohn), I do so in conjunction with other gear.  Like I'll wear the Ultrajohn under my drysuit, and sometimes I'll wear a liner under the Ultrajohn.

By itself, the 3 mm suit is likely not enough to keep you warm if you go in to 50 degree water for very long.

Last summer was an anomaly with 60 degree plus water near shore, but you should plan on 50 degrees.

I also sometimes where a 7 mm suit under my drysuit.  Bottom line is it's easier to shed some layers than to try to get warm when you don't have enough gear on board.

Best of luck - keep refining it.

I wear my 3mm in summer and I think its fine.  I've spent a bit of time in the water rockpicking in it and it is ok for a while, but you do start to get a little cold, especially with bare arms.

That seems like pretty standard gear around here---unless you want to shell the big bucks for a drysuit. I wear a FJ with rashguard, good quality windbreaker. With pfd over that, I can usually stay warm enough.
I don't like stuff that sucks.

Thanks for the input guys I think I'm going to get this on and hope in the pool and see how warm or cold I am in it, we'll maybe a leg so that if it's too cold I can send it back with minimal drying I doubt the ocean or bay is as cold as my pool right now which is freezing.

IMO, depends on if you want to dress for worst case scenario, if you end up in the water for a long period of time say 2-3 hours, 3mm might cost you your life or at least some dangerous level of hypothermia. The possibility exists,

Get a 7mm FJ and have a relief zipper put in it. Then get a 2-3 mm surf jacket.

That might sound like allot to wear but you can lighten up later.

Also a hull full of pool noodles is a good idea if you haven't done so already.

3mm is fine for a momentary dip

Sorry back goes the 3mm and I just got the 7mm john suit coming in. Also picked up a rash guard and some pants and jacket to put over the suit to keep warm if needed. Hopefully after this I'll have all my necessary gear to be OTW. I stuck my leg in the pool with the 3mm and it helped but not much of a difference

If Ling a Ding doesn't have a Ding a Ling, the answer might be different.

Well there are those times when you may need it in the back if you had a ( greezzy ) meal.
Like this poor girl.
