I'm part of the NWKA AOTY committee and one of the prizes we have lined up for 2016 is custom built rod from a local rod maker. He isn't a kayaker and is asking about ideas to make this rod unique. One of my thoughts was a leash attachment point.
Has anyone here done some thing similar?

If you were having a custom made rod for kayak fishing would you like a permanent leash point?

Personally, I'd like something above the reel but I'm torn between doing some in more elegant than the double zip tie method or going more along the lines of a fixed pad eye. Kinda like an oversized hook holder.

I only use leashes for surf launch and landings but the idea of a well built custom rod with a leash attachment point seems like a great idea.

Any other ideas?

Thoughts?

Here are a couple pictures of what I'm thinking about.

Good question! I would personally vote No.
Under the "Other Ideas" category though...lately I've been wondering about the feasibility of applying the X-tube wrap over a section of pool noodle. Because lots of guys use pool noodle or pipe insulation for flotation...but it would maybe be less bulky and look slightly cooler if it was wrapped with some X-tube material.

I googled x tube, and the results were not what I expected.  :smt012 :smt005

I'd vote yes. A pad eye built into the rod would be ideal, IMHO.
I don't like stuff that sucks.

Cable cuffs, cell phone charger cables. See Palmetto Kayak Fishing for the details.  No need for anything on my rod!
No leashes on what I am fishing, only spare rods.  In salt nada.

Less bulky?  The idea behind using pool noodles for floatation is to displace water in the event of a leak.  Compressing the noodle would defeat the purpose of the noodle by lessening the amount of water it could displace.

That is a great idea!  Definite yes for me.  I've tried the pool noodle thing, but it wasn't for me.  It was a bit bulky for my taste so I have been using the leash for the past few years so something like this sounds awesome.  I know most people worry about multiple leash being a safety issue if you flip, but I usually take only 1 setup on the salt so its not a huge worry for me, but it is always on my mind.

My leash saved me $400 when I was trolling with the rod in hand and a salmon hit so hard that the rod slipped out of my wet hand.  I've always wondered what if I was using the float when something like this happened with a big fish on + the DD6, if it'd actually stay afloat or even the pool noodle may rip out with the fish pulling so hard?  Luckily, it was leashed and I was able to turn back and retrieve my rod/reel.   :smt003

I think he is talking about pool noodles or pipe wrap around a rod for floatation, not stuffed into the hull of a kayak.

You're correct.  I'm just old and senile.  Wasn't thinking rods, thinking kayaks.  But on the positive side, I was thinking, I think.

I vote YES.     or at least a bigger eye hook than what some rods come with

noodle or leash ..seems there isn't a wrong answer just preference of one over the other ..have it leashed ,hook a thresher , mishandle the rod maybe it goes over attached to the kayak ..maybe you act quick grab it back ...maybe fumble for your knife, over you go with the yak...  and or maybe you get the knife cut the leash lose rod anyway.....have a noodle on it same scenario lose the rod...maybe it lies in having to accept that crap happens and losing a rod might occur ...not saying being prepared and taking measures to prevent it isn't appropriate ....if it means that much don't take the rod out on a kayak or accept that no matter what losing it might happen ...nobody "likes" losing a rod except maybe mean ex - wife who enjoys hearing about bad things happening to you j/k ....now after all that ... Put a leash attachment on it above the reel ... Sometimes it's just good to have options

This is one time you need a few periods. :smt005
