Yesterday at Shelter Cove:

Sunday's forecast for Shelter Cove was 5 to 10 knot winds from the NW...

Domenic and I arrived just after 6AM to find raspy winds between launch and the Bell. We went ahead and got the boats ready, but things just got worse. We ended up waiting just over 3 hours on the beach for gale force winds to let up!

Once we got on the water it was the usual - rockfish and lingcod munching our chovies, and once in a while we had brief hookups that could've been salmon. As has been common this season, we didn't have any confirmed salmon hookups all day. We saw a powerboat hookup twice, and we got our best strikes and stripped baits right around that, but it just wasn't happening for us today. Eric Kaai joined us for a couple hours too - nice to see you, Eric!

Regardless of the final score in fishing, the opportunity to paddle some miles offshore of the Cove is always appreciated.

Will be watching for the next window.

79 miles paddled from April 2nd to May 1st - not a hell of a lot to show for it, but a few salmon dinners have been much appreciated.

You have your health to show for it.  Much more than most can do.

5/2 monday at the Cove
I would be there today, but I have other commitments.  Finally, got a king this year and before I got to the whistle Matt already had his limit.  If I didn't drink that nasty free blue drink "Adios Amigo" the day before and not get sick I would have gotten my limit.  It seemed like the bite shutdown around 1.  The water was cold all day and the current was ripping north.  Matt and I drifted for halibut and I had something big break my leader that didn't fight like a lingcod.

The launch is going to be interesting depending on the swell direction.  You definitely want to watch your back and time it right during low tide.
