Scoreboard re-vamp going down lately...

Local media reporting a hot bite for Pacific Halibut out of Humboldt Bay, and, more closely related to GSX, sounds like a couple halibut were hooked by yaks at the Cove recently.  A guy named Gary on a green Cobra had something on for 45 minutes that he couldn't get up - finally tightened the drag and horsed it until he lost it.  Also, Rob / Matanaska broke something big off while drifting for flatties this past Monday.

Pacifics will be closed during GSX (open May 1st through 15th), but you never know when you'll hook one - even in close to shore.

Should be open for spearing year round right?

 

(D) Diving or Spearfishing: When diving or spearfishing, as authorized in Section 28.90,
all species may be taken or possessed year-round (See 27.50(b)(2)) for exceptions in the Cowcod
Conservation Areas). When boat-based groundfish fishing is closed, all types of fishing gear, except
spearfishing gear, are prohibited to be aboard the vessel or watercraft (motorized or non-motorized)
while spearfishing for the purpose of taking or possessing these species under this provision.

Since it is under stricter regs like salmon I don't think you can because it's under a quota that is calculated according to the days that the season is open and surveyed by CDFW fish counters.

I talked to Gary and heard that story too before I launched

From Humboldt Tuna Club - Kody King, a regular troller at Shelter Cove and a highly skilled angler, limited out Saturday just outside and north of the Whistle, and then Sunday it was a bit slower - they got three, including the 25 pound beauty pictured above.

Yes, crabbing is open at Shelter Cove and it sounds like it's pretty good.
