They were just checking everyone's fishing license, ID and hooks as well as asking about safety equipment.  My buddy David didn't have a whistle, so they gave him one.  They were cool, but they really need to consider how far off course they cause a human powered boat to end up when there's current ripping.

I appreciated how level headed you stayed while still being explicit about your grievances. It's not hard to imagine someone spending the rest of the video bitching about government overreach and yadda yadda yadda. Well done.

thats exactly what i thought! I have not been checked by our coast guard, but when stopped by DFG I have so far only needed to provide a valid fishing license. Wouldn't be very hard to start carrying both though...

So what would they have done if you did not have id? Usually at the cove I leave it at the house.

There is no law requiring you to carry your drivers license while not driving an automobile. I take my fishing license, and the rest is in the truck/camp. If they insist, I guess we are going to shore.....

It did seem a bit odd that I'd have to produce an ID, but I didn't have a problem with it.  I only have a grievance regarding the drifting in current issue.

The guys have a job to do, and I trust that they are even handed and fair - the fact that they gave David a whistle proves that they're trying to help vs. just looking to cite someone.

I wonder if there is a way to notify the coast guard ahead of a big event like this, not so they can harass everyone, but if they knew about it ahead of time they could potentially react to something quicker if need be.  Just a thought.

I keep an expired drivers license with my fishing license and it's always been excepted by wardens.

They have known in the past about events. One time the weather was bad and they cruised around before checking on everyone. Another time they showed up on a jet ski looking for the emergency beacon that was going off. Never found it. I do not think we need to alert them to our being there. We are big enough, smart enough, and there are enough of us to handle most if not all issues.

I got checked out in port San Luis. They checked my drivers license to verify the signature on my fishing license.

I'm surprised the Coast Guard would be checking tackle...
