bAss pro sucks. Walmart bang scent, 6$. Bass pro 9$. Literally nothing is cheaper there. New rocklin store 40 seconds from my house I was super stoked for it to open. Bass pro is an emergency must get it asap stop for me only. Good luck!

Their case price on #8 ammo is like $9/box. I can buy it all day at walmart for $5. Their brand of stuff is junk, and they never have region specific gear. I prefer local businesses, but will go to the Manteca one out of convenience, or to check stuff out before buying online. Dont plan on goung to sj or rocklin store, sportsmans warehouse is right there in two places in sac.

Ya thats what sucks the big one is its not regions specific whatsoever. And the employees, jesus christ.

I was gandering at the new lures that is a single lure but molded to look like many, a small school if you will. The employee walks up to me and says..." thats for the fisherman not the fish, fish cant even see that well in the water". I just look at him as retarded as possible and say, " ya, they can". Useless
" The fish are where you find em ". Grandpa. R.I.P & fuck you cancer!

It's tough for any big box retailer to be totally region specific.  They can, and do, have some region specific items.  The amount of effort involved in purchasing for region specific typically ends up with higher than average pricing.  Small 'Mom & Pop' stores with 1 or sometimes a handful of locations in one geographic area have the luxury of being more specific to that region.  It's just how it works....

Employees wise ... there will always be the few that are bad & the few that are GREAT with any big box retail store.  Unless you've worked in retail, it's hard to get a grasp on the hiring, training, etc. process that has happened.  Comes down to wages.  Big Box needs 'X' # of employees to cover the floor, 7 days a week, 12+ hours a day.  With a given budget, it's often hard to get a superbly skilled employee 100% of the time for the wages they have to offer in any given marketplace.  Small 'Mom & Pop' locations are not always open as many days or as long of hours and aren't covering as many total departments as larger BB retail stores.  One cannot simply substitute a vastly smaller, local retail location for a BB store & assume all the same.

Tread lightly on how you refer to the BPS employees ... you might just find a few NCKA brothers/sisters who work at various locations.  I don't work for these locations or any of the other retail shops I support, but I felt it was necessary to shed a little light on the world of retail in this industry; both BB & M&P.

Pricing wise ... Wal-Mart will almost always kick everyones butt on pricing.  Not always, but most of the time.  As the largest, they demand that in their buying power.  Ever try to find someone in their fishing/hunting area who knows anything pertaining to that industry?  Might find a gem of an employee now & then but more often than not I find the person who last week was rotating tires is now the guy working in fishing & the next month he's a cashier.  Their wages often reflect the level of individual they are looking to hire.

Lures ...  Well, I don't have any scientific proof but at a certain point, can't we all admit that some of the stuff on the market is for the fish & some is for the fisherman.  That lure you speak of, I'd agree that it's for the fisherman rather than the fish.

Im completely aware there are people on ncka in cahoots with bass pro. I dont have to be careful about anything during the course of stating facts. Did you read in my last reply anywhere that ALL the BP employees are useless? I just was sharing my experience there I dont need a lecture about it.

Cahoots, no ... employees, yes.

To quote:  And the employees, jesus christ.

   Yeah ... I read that.

You'll know it when I'm lecturing.  :smt002  Not saying you aren't entitled to a bad experience.  I know I've had my fare share of bad retail experiences and I'm sure I've been the cause of some when I was a retail manager.  I made it a point to do so with some customers  :smt003

But they do have a shooting arcade!  :smt007 :smt007

I know the regional stocking is an issue for a big retailer. I will go there when I need lots of dif stuff, because you know they always have it, if it pertains to the outdoors. Or they have the equivalent. Kinda like going to a Walmart for household items.  I prefer the mom and pop stores, and dont mind paying a premium for good service, and also for supporting what was an american icon once....the little guy.

SJ store doesn't have the arcade.  I was told it's because they have the restaurant/bowling alley instead.  Same for them not having the Fudge Shop but in exchange they can allow pets.  I too love the M&P stores for the hometown knowledge & feel.  The one I worked at in Florida had been around since 1909.  Some of the items they had on their shelves, like old hand carved duck decoys were from close to the time they opened & still had the cryptic price coding on them from the son of the orig. owner.  Was the only place in town you could buy a handmade cast net for mullet.

Ahhhh, that explains why I saw a dog on a leash admiring the swimming fish!

My kids were looking for the shooting arcade too, but I know they would rather have the bowling alley (me too).  They bowled, I drank beer and watched the Raiders put up a W!  :beer1

After spending 26 years in retail management this is possibly one of the best explanations for how it works....

Nice job Bill!

On the regional stocking issue. Unless the buyers are willing to make the effort you may not see any difference. When I was running the Sportmart in Daly City (eons ago) they sent us ice fishing lures when the store opened as Sportmart was based in Chicago. Took us months to get the saltwater section up to par for customers in the area. Very surprised buyers to discover that saltwater destroyed freshwater sales in that store. If someone at the SJ BPS was willing to contact the buyers in Springfield MO.
and clue them into the saltwater needs it might get fixed. Just a thought!
By the way..hiring good people in the bay area is much harder than out here in the Valley.

I asked at the Manteca store about stocking up on salt stuff. They have a corporate stocking list, and inventory guidelines. They cannot deviate from that much at all. I see their point there too.

Employees....if you have more than one, you will have employee issues.

I was briefly self employed but quit in a huff. Couldnt stand my a$$hole boss!

BpS is def not competing entirely on price. So if price is all you care about then your likely buying used gear n only shop on amazon. BPS offers a getaway retail experience that, for some, exceeds the premium placed on the commodities. Additionally you get a nearly unparalleled selection that permits look n feel comparison in store. Aint do that on the web. ("Showrooming" aside ...)
