What's the scoop on using fish clip stringers in saltwater?  With all the shark attacks and sea lions taking fish off the side of your boat do you actually hang your catch off the side of your yak?  Salt in a yak is really new to me so I'm asking the general membership....in the water or in the boat?  Thanks.

I used a stringer but I wasn't thinking,I was just excited to be catching fish.as I look back now I'd keep it aboard and give it the occasional dip
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

Otherwise I like to keep them alive so I can trade out bigger lings

Pretty sure that's illegal.

I do not worry about sharks, but sea lions are a different story.  Hence, I never float my fish off the boat.  If a sea lion grabs your fish (and they WILL), they won't let go.  Releasing the clip may not be an option if the keeper line is under stress from a 500-pound beast on the other end.  Boat can flip.

Then, there you are, in the water with a feeding sea lion.

Ever see a sea lion skull?  It is very similar to a black bear, in terms of skull density and TEETH.

My best advice:  Don't hang your fish off the side in the ocean.

Another negative aspect of 'upgrading' from a game clip is that the fish, while still alive, are more than likely damaged or injured and may not survive.

Have safe and be fun!

Pretty sure that's illegal.

I heard it was legal but if anyone wants to chime in please do.
If you have one or two and trade one of those out maybe. If you have three on and trade, that would be illegal for sure. You are in possession of and controlling four until you release the fourth one.

Stop guessing at the question....it's either legal or not

DFG handbook said possession. so in theory if you have 1 or 2 you can released a smaller catch and still not have the legal limit but if you have 3 already and catch a bigger that's over possession. Lings are big already so just released any ones you catch after 3 or don't keep any that are below 25.

why take chances? use the clip to better organize the fish and put in kayak and cover with a wet towel.

Once you have a fish on a stringer, its in possession. You can't release it and trade for another, that's high grading and illegal.

Does this answer your question? (taken from a past F&G Q&A

In fisheries with number limits (e.g. bass with a five-fish limit), the limit is defined by a number of fish. “Take” is defined as the hunt, pursuit, catch, capture or killing of a fish or the attempt to hunt, pursue, catch, capture or kill a fish. If the limit is five fish, and you have five and continue to fish, you are attempting to take more than five, which by law is considered “take” of an overlimit. It’s a subtle difference, but it is different. By allowing “zero take” fisheries, the Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is allowing angler opportunities where fishing may occur without the retention of any fish.

This.

It's also unethical. A ling on a stringer isn't likely to survive release.

Thanks for the quick replies guys.  Didn't mean to stir up a hornets nest...I was hoping to be lucky enough to possess just one. LOL
:) Thanks again.
