Newbie question here.   Why are pool noodles so popular for kayak flotation cavity's as opposed to just an inflatable bag designed specifically for that purpose?

never heard of inflatable bags before...  pool noodles are cheap and its dimensions make it easy to stuff and still have room for other items below deck.

Use them to float your rods in case they fall over board. Float your yak if you take on water. My favorite, hang recently used bass lures on it while they dry.

I guess I was not clear in my original post.  I understand the need for inner chamber flotation, it's a question of noodles vs. air bags designed exactly for this purpose like these:

Nobody here seems to use the bags, but I hear pool noodles mentioned all over the place, so there must be a reason for that choice.   I have neither right now, so I'm looking to do something.

If a shark takes a bite, my hope is that it'll fill up on the noodles and go away. If it chomps down on a air bag, it's sure to still be hungry...

There are pros & cons to each flotation method (pool noodle vs float bag vs expanding foam). I'm not gonna say this one is better than that one, but I WILL say that I have to remove pool noodles from inside my kayak each time I go to a freshwater lake/river that has mussel inspections...because the noodles create a cycle of condensation that make the inside damp from soggy noodles.

In the meantime, here's some old discussions on this topic:

Shark hit?   Seriously, is there a significant sample size for this fear?  Yikes!

+1  :smt003 Usually found at the dollar store this time of year.

Just pulled the ones out of my X-Factor and washed them  :smt044  They are still good, but i'm going to pickup another 20 to shove in there.  Seems I have stolen a few out of there over the last 4 years for other projects :smt005
