happy friday all!

as a long time saltwater fisherman, i know to avoid sand and saltwater to the gear unless you have the big $$$ to spend on the fancy stuff.

regular maintenance, little bit of wd40 here and there as well as fresh water wipe downs are a must.  got all that.

now that i'm looking at yaking in the salt i have concerns about my gear.

i've been watching successful and failed surf launching videos on yt and each one of them shows salt and in some cases saltwater/sand splashing onto the gear.

what do you do to protect your gear?  carry freshwater and just rinse once in deeper water and then again once you get home?

thoughts?

tight lines!

I stow my rods and reels in the center hatch of my Trident 13 for launch and landing.

If fresh water is available then as soon as I get off the water and then again when I get home.

For surf launches and landings, I stow my rods and reels in the rod pod of my Ocean Kayak Trident 13. I rinse off my gear once I get back to the car, or back home.

'Corrosion X' spray

WD-40 is generally not a good choice from my understanding; supposedly it attracts moisture over time?

Another product is called 'Salt Away'

My older model tarpon doesn't have a rod pod, so I remove the reels and stow them in a plano box or dry bag. Rods take a beating no matter what, but I strap mine to my "non-exit" side of the kayak during surf launches.
Rinse everything well once back at the shed.

A light drag setting allows more water intrusion than a high drag setting. I'm not sure if free spool on a star drag allows intrusion.

Lightly rinse or spray your reel with the drag on. Store it with the drag off.

I've heard there is a product that you spray on your reel before you expose it to the elements. I guess it's like wax and repels water.

WD-40 = Water Displacement formula #40.  But it is a poor lubricant and will trap dirt/sand.

WD-40 is also awesome at dissolving some types of grease.  I'll use it on gunked up CraigsList acquisitions to clean out most of the grease from a reel before cleaning more finely and then repacking in fresh grease.

I only use it to do a quick wipe. I've had reels for years that look and work great.

I'm sure there are better products.

Thought salt away was for engines used in salt but that makes sense.

Will give it a try

It's used for engines, boat hulls, etc...  Crazy list of uses on their web site.  Learned some new stuff about it on there too!

Store it with the drag off.

I'm intrigued by this. What is the benefit of store with the drag loose?
